A week ago we were lucky to live a great surprise trip to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. We only knew a handful of things: we were going to meet with cold, with a Little Mermaid and with colored facades. After the trip we returned home with a wonderful experience and with a lot of tips. In this post we collect them thinking of those who want to travel to Copenhagen, we hope they serve you!

The first day we advise you to sign up for this free tour of Copanhague in Spanish: you will begin to understand the city, you will know its curiosities and a local expert can give you toooda the info you need. Remember to leave a propin 🙂

In this post we tell you the 20 best things to see and do in Copenhagen.

Although on the map Copenhagen looks like an extensive city, walking is the best way to travel it (and the cheapest). We, in the 3 days that we were, did not take the subway or the bus once… well, we caught the train to arrive from the airport (35 DKK), yes :-p

Another highly recommended option, and that everyone uses, is to go in bike... Did you know that Copenhagen is one of the most ecofriendly cities in the world? Very cool 🙂

How to get from the airport to the center of Copenhagen. You have three options: bus, subway and train, and all cost DKK 35 (the rates that we understand depend on the areas, not the type of transport). If you go near the la Central Station (next to Tivoli) the best thing is the train, it leaves from Terminal 3, takes about 24 minutes and has a frequency of 10-15 minutes. You can buy the ticket at the machines or at the window (if you are going to pay with a 500 DKK ticket you will have to do it at the window). The airport subway is the M2 line and arrives in 20 minutes and often 5-6 minutes to the train station.Nørreport.

And we don't talk about hairy dogs, we talk about hot dogs, one of the most typical street food from the Danish capital, and we warn you because they may not be as cheap as it seems! Beware of street carts that prepare sausages and hot dogs, not all stalls have the same price. Our advice is: if the sausage costs more than 20 DKK, go for something else! We have seen stalls selling them up to 30 DKK (more than € 4), without the bread roll (another 5 DKK) :-p

There are ways to reduce costs, especially food. One trick is to buy bread, sausages or pastries (sweet or savory) in some Supermarket and eat it in a pic nic plan (if the weather is good) or for dinner at the hotel. The prices, although we are like in Spain, are not much higher.

Here you find a supermarket in the center of Copenhagen:

  • Aldi (Gothersgade 52)
  • Lidl (Vesterbrogade 25)
  • Irma (Nørre Voldgade 76)

If you want to eat outside you should know that at noon, if you walk through the city center, the buffet option is quite typical, especially if you fancy Chinese or Indian food. The cheapest buffet we found was the Samos, a Greek restaurant where for 45 DKK (about € 6) you can put on your boots with meatballs, baked pasta, rice, meat with sauce, vegetables and salad buffet. It is not of extreme quality but it was not bad at all! The drink is not included in the buffet price, but a pint of Toburg costs DKK 30 (€ 4) and a Coca-Cola DKK 25 (just over € 3).

Where: Skindergade 29

We also give you these 10 options of restaurants where to eat Good and cheap in Copenhagen.

Drinking a beer is the best way to end a day trip ... but what if beer costs a pasture? Should we toast with cans of Lidl? Well no: the happy hour roll works quite a lot in Copenhagen. Write down these sites:

  • Generator Hostel Bar, a beautiful suuuuper site, where from 16 to 17 and from 20 to 21 the pints of Carlsberg and Turborg cost DKK 25, we doubt that there is a better offer in the city! It is in Adelgade 5.
  • Vesterbro Bryghus (Streckers), here we had 4 pints because they were half price, 35 DKK (from 16 to 18). Good atmosphere and good beer! In Vesterbrogade 2B

Ugly photo, cool moment XD

Copenhagen in winter can be mmmuuuuyyyy cold. We find ourselves with a temperature that varied between 2º and -1º, but we did not go too cold… it will be true that phrase that says “There is no bad weather, but inappropriate clothes!”. A trick apart from put on everything as warm as you have at home, it is to buy a pair of thermal sachets to have in your pocket in decathlon (they are also sold in Tiger and in Copenhagen you will find a few stores of those). Or follow Rober's fashion: don't leave an inch of skin in sight XD

Here you have the socks from temperature Y precipitation Annuals in Copenhagen:

Stroll through the center, take some pictures with the channel Nyhavn and its colorful houses, go see the Little mermaid, see instead of the guard in Amalienborg, freak out how beautiful the castle is Rosenborg, enjoy of Tivoli... are all things to see and do in Copenhagen, however do not stop ...

To visit Christiania, a self-managed community, liberal and full of Street Art. We like to define it as the rebellious child of Copenhagen, where there is even a street, the Pusher Street, where whoever wants to can buy soft drugs (hashish, let's go). But be careful with the camera, you can actually take pictures throughout the enclosure, but not in the street where the vendors are concentrated (you will see it advertised on the walls), it is also not convenient to stay to watch or sit down to take the fresh one (to Rober They told him that he could NOT sit down!: S). Curiosities aside, Christiania is worth taking a walk on the shores of the "beach" of Copenhagen, full of houses of artists and very peculiar shops.

Whenever we visit a city we like to explore its gastronomic side and we must say that, if you do not have a bulky sum of Danish Crowns, you will be somewhat disappointed. In Copenhagen there are a few level restaurants (with Michelin star included) but they are very expensive. A place where you can try something typical, without having to ask for a loan are the markets. Point out these two:

  • Paperøen, a street market with a few street food stalls, the majority ethnic. Here you will find everything from burritos to butter chicken dishes, pizzas, hamburgers and Moroccan sandwiches. It has a hipster atmosphere and good vibes. Prices between 40-120 DKK. What is expensive are drinks (minimum 20-25 DKK), so if you want to save something bring a bottle of water 😉
  • Torvehallerne, a market to buy fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, desserts and even knives. There are stalls that prepare food and others where you can buy fish / seafood and have it cooked right away. There is also a place to try thesmørrebrød, some black bread toasts with various ingredients so typical of Denmark (they are usually cold).

Here we recommend 10 restaurants to eat in Copenhagen (good and cheap).

Moroccan sandwich in Paperøen (80 DKK) and piece of margarita pizza (40 DKK)

Know that the most famous amusement park in Copenhagen closes its doors until April! We are left wanting to walk through it ... will come back!

In Denmark they do not use € but the Danish Crown (DKK), which you will have to obtain in order to pay. We always recommend using a card when traveling, both for payments and to get money. It is not very cool to carry large amounts of cash on top, let alone having to change it in destinations whose currency is not €. But watch out for commissions! Here we tell you the solutions to have money abroad.

The perfect solution we find is to carry two Bnext cards (one each), as the first option, and two N26 cards for payments and if the first fails. Both are free and complement each other perfectly, allowing us to save money in commissions. Word of the traveler!

Here are a few ideas for tours and excursions to do in / from Copenhagen.

So far our tips for traveling to Copenhagen (and don't screw it up), hopefully they will help you ... enjoy your trip!
