First of all let's make things clear: Indonesia is a country made up of more than 17,500 islands, so you can imagine how big, extensive and different its cuisine is. In the Hinduist Bali, for example, one of the most typical dishes is the Babi Guling (pork!), Something that in the rest of Indonesia (the majority Muslim country) could not eat ...

But it is also true that there are a number of popular recipes that share their success in any corner of the country. So let's tell you what are the 10 dishes to eat in Indonesia:

1. NASI CAMPUR

One of the most typical, common and cheap dishes of Indonesia. The nasi campur is a recipe based on rice (nasi) that is accompanied with pieces of meat (usually chicken), vegetables, eggs, tempeh (a kind of tofu from fermented soybeans) and sauces. Obviously there are vegetarian versions, you really just have to ask not to serve the meat :-p

2. NASI GORENG

It is a dish of fried rice (usually with chicken, vegetables and soy sauce). It is one of the most common alternatives and you will find it in almost any warung (local family-run restaurants).

3. MEE GORENG

It is the noodle version (mee) of the previous one. Equally tasty and common. The truth is that it is one of those dishes with which you always get it right, if you are not very creative, if you want to eat something fast and delicious, that does not bite and cheap ... mee goreng!

4. SATE

One of our favorite options: sate (or satay) are meat skewers (usually chicken) that are prepared on the grill and covered with a delicious peanut sauce. They are usually accompanied with ketupat (glutinous rice). You can find them in many beach bars and they are certainly cheap.

5. GADO GADO

One of the rarest salads we have ever seen: Gado Gado is usually prepared with bean sprouts, green beans, tofu, cabbage, eggs and potatoes, although the most curious thing is that it is served with shrimp chips and peanut sauce.

6. LUMPIA

The Indonesian version of the spring roll. Although each lumpia is different, the filling is usually meat, carrots, leek and rice noodles.

7. BAKSO

Possibly the favorite dish of the Indonesians! Bakso is a meat / fish noodle and meatloaf soup. Do not expect the typical Spanish meatballs: those in Indonesia have a much more compact and glutinous texture.

8. KARI AYAM

Curry lovers are in luck: kary ayam is a dish of chicken curry cooked in coconut milk, delicious. It is served with white rice.

9. PEPES IKAN

The word "pepes" refers to a way to prepare food inside banana leaves. "Ikan" means fish. So you know: if you want to try fish cooked inside banana leaves, ask for pepes ikan… you won't regret it!

10. PISANG GORENG

A delicious dessert, although not very light: pisang goreng is nothing more and nothing less than fried plantain. If you also accompany it with vanilla ice cream, mmm: orgasmic!
