Chelsea, MeatPacking and Hell's Kitchen (small names :-p) are another 3 Manhattan neighborhoods What we wanted to visit As you know, New York is a living city and in constant metamorphosis, and a clear example is the evolution of its neighborhoods. You can be walking through one of the most sought-after areas of the moment without knowing that a few years ago it was a depressed place or full of factories. That is exactly what has happened in these neighborhoods.

In this article we tell you which are the main attractions of each:

And don't forget to take a look at the 100 things to see and do in New York!

High line

Not everyone knows this original urban park, created from some old elevated railroad tracks, which crosses western Manhattan. In the walk of about 2Km you can enjoy countless works of street art (murals, sculptures, temporary exhibitions), cafes with terraces, and of course, a haven of peace and vegetation in the heart of the Big Apple. Although without a doubt the best of all is that, thanks to the privileged situation, you can spy on the world that is “under” your feet. Not to mention that the views are the cane!

advice: There are many entrances to the park, but if you have time we advise you to go through it: from 34th Street with 12 Ave (Chelsea) to Gansevoort Street with Washington St (Meatpacking District). You can see the calendar of events and more info on their website www.thehighline.org. Here you have the map in PDF.

Eye: in the northern part of the Highline, since March 2019 you can visit a new star attraction ... we talk about The Vessel. Do not miss it 🙂

Chelsea Market

It is one of the most famous gastronomic markets in New York, full of food stalls (although somewhat lacking), souvenir shops, clothing boutiques and lots of vintage details, remember that it is inside an old factory. This type of premises where abandoned buildings are being recovered are becoming increasingly fashionable, we love them! As we have already told you, cheap, cheap is not, but luckily looking is free!

Curiosity: It is located in the same factory where the Oreos were invented!

Art Galeries

Chelsea is a neighborhood famous for its countless art galleries, so if the contemporary roll is cool ... you're in luck! The best area is the one between 16th and 27th streets, and 10th and 11th avenues. You will not have trouble finding some of them: in total there are more than 300!

Write down the data: the openings, with buffet and champagne included, are usually on Thursday nights (there are almost always!). They are for free!

Chelsea Hotel

One of the most beloved hotels by artists of all time ... and beware, around this red brick building there are a few legends! Jack Kerouack, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen (who by the way wrote the song Chelsea Hotel!), Arthur Miller, Edith Piaf, Bob Marley, Andy Warhol, Standley Kubrick, Jimi Hendrix, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, among others, passed by .

But they are not all happy stories ... Among its walls there were somewhat murky deaths, like that of Nancy Spunge, murdered in the same bed of her partner: Sid Vicious, guitarist of The Sex Pistols. They found her in room 100, bleeding, stabbed with the artist's knife who, after being arrested, released him because there was insufficient evidence against him.

One of the most curious stories is the one surrounding the figures of Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin: They say that Leonard was looking for Brigitte Bardot when, in the elevator, he ran into Janis. The rest is history ... and if not, listen to the song Chelsea Hotel by the Canadian artist (we put it below, please watch the video !!).

They also say that it was here that the King of the Beat Generation, Jack Kerouac, wrote his most successful novel: "On the Road," or that Arthur Clarke wrote during his stay at the Chelsea Hotel, "2001: Odyssey in Space."

Without a doubt, the Chelsea Hotel is one of the most historic places (and stories) in New York.

In the past it was an industrial and marginal neighborhood, where a lot of slaughterhouses, factories and meat companies were located: here is the origin of its name (meat = meat, packing = packaging). Today the story is very different, as we have already told you, New York knows how to reinvent its most marginal areas and Meatpacking has become one of the coolest neighborhoods in Manhattan. It is curious to think how, in the same streets where today you find people looking for party and fun, in the '80s there was a drug dealer, prostitutes and a rather bleak atmosphere.

The old factories have been converted into art galleries, boutiques, restaurant, bars where you can have a drink and discos and clubs where you can end the night.

Art lovers can visit the Whitney Museum of American Art, a rather interesting art museum, with works by Jackson Pollock, Georgia O'Keff and Jasper Johns. Admission costs about $ 25 but on Fridays, from 9 to 22, you can pay whatever you want.

It is a small neighborhood north of Chelsea. It is one of the best places to go for a copichuela at night ... or if you prefer, a beer with puppy included for $ 3 (plus 1 tip XD). Where? In Rudy's grill and bar!

Why is the neighborhood called that? No, it has nothing to do with Gordon Ramsey XD This is why.

As you have seen, the neighborhoods of Chelsea, Meatpacking and Hell's Kitchen (in the heart of Manhattan) are three spectacular areas that house very interesting sites. Sign them up for your trip to New York!
