For our first guest post I thought of a very nice girl who writes an entertaining blog whose philosophy follows the premise of "when the idea of the trip appears ... there is no going back!". I'm talking about Eva from An Idea A Journey. I assure you that your blog will not bore you since Eva and her friends are restless asses: in this year they traveled through France, Norway, Iceland, Portugal, Greece and soon they will start another adventure, it gives me that with Asian flavor… Today Eva helps us answer the question: what to eat in Greece? and gives us awalk through gastronomy from this lovely country.

For some reason I begin to be known among the nearby people for my culinary advice. Whenever someone goes to a country where I have already been I feel that uncontrollable temptation to recommend trying this or this other dish. Because gastronomy is also part of the culture of a country. And despite the fact that on multiple occasions, for reasons of savings, I am a traveler of those of “Not without my fuet”, there are countries that deserve to scratch your pocket and eat.

This happened in my recent incursion into Greece. I didn't spend a hard time sleeping. My mattresses were on the one hand the sack and the sand of the beaches and on the other the accommodation that for four nights offered to the ex-Erasmus my former university. Since that time I had not returned there, but returning made me remember how much I loved the food at that time. I knew that the trip would be to sleep where you could (what if it's summer and it's hot) but eat ... in Greece you have to eat!

Guys, a hotel will always be a hotel, here or in Moscow. But Greek cuisine must be tried there. That's why, when I received the invitation from the friends of Backpacking the World to make this gastronomic post, I didn't think about it.

If you are one of those who like to eat well and have not yet been to Greece, what are you waiting for?

My six favorite dishes oftaverna

The taverns These are the restaurants where you will find the most traditional dishes of the country. If you want to try the best starters, delicious grilled meats or grilled fish High quality, it is the most suitable place to go. As always, ask people which one is the best taverna. In general, those that are somewhat far from the center offer better quality / price dishes. Here are my favorite dishes:

Xoriatikí salata

Here it is known as Greek salad, it is however the "village salad" if we translate literally. A simple recipe made with tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, feta cheese and Kalamata olives (seasoned with spectacular olive oil and oregano). Simple and high quality ingredients make it an indispensable dish. So much so that my days in Greece were counted on salad per day. And I assure you that after months living there, I never got tired! Addiction? 😀

Saganaki threw

This exquisite fried cheese is one of the entrees that I like the most.

Feta sto fourno

The traditional Greek feta cheese comes in many different recipes. However, this baked preparation is delicious, since the cheese melts between tomatoes, peppers and oregano.

Oktapodaki

As a good Galician, I always appreciate a good octopus 😀 In Greece it is a very common dish in psarotavernas (fish taverns) and is usually prepared on the grill: yum yum.

Dolmades

One of the dishes that goes out of the ordinary with respect to our gastronomy. The dolmades are small rolls made of vine leaves and stuffed with cooked and spiced white rice, seasoned with lemon. A laborious dish but what you can do yourself after taking a walk through the vineyards to get leaves. In the photo you can see the photo of the ones I made myself 😀

Moussakas

This recipe may be one of the best known of Greek cuisine. Similar to a lasagna, the layers are made with sliced eggplant and stuffed with meat and vegetables. Like lasagna, it is accompanied with bechamel and is ... delicious!

To call them somehow, since in Greece it is difficult to give themselves to greasy food. Here you have my two favorite dishes and the rest of the menu for who dares to decipher it 😉

Souvlaki

Something similar to what we know here for morunos skewers, souvlaki can be eaten anywhere fast food made with chicken meat or marinated pork.

Gyro

Similar to Turkish kebab, it is pita bread stuffed with pork accompanied by tomatoes, onion, feta cheese, “tzatziki” (cucumber and yogurt sauce) and the big difference with Turkey !: potatoes. It may sound weird, but once you try it, you are lost.

If something has Greece, it forces you to eat. You walk quietly in the street and the shop windows of the stores call you and ask you to enter. You just have to see the showcase of the photo to realize ... Yes, yes. Luckily, as I said, the dishes are quite healthy, because otherwise, it would be a fat farm 😀

Tyrosite

These triangular shaped dumplings made with phyllo dough are usually filled with feta cheese or a cheese mixture. A perfect snack for mid-morning or mid-afternoon 😀

Spanakópita

This cake created from a mixture of feta cheese and spinach and also wrapped in phyllo dough, can be purchased at almost any bakery. Be careful, hook up!

So you know, if one day you go to Greece, do without anything, but not food 😀

As they would say in Greece: καλη ορεξη! (Kali oreksi = Bon appetit!)
