Day 2: Copenhagen in one day: Rosenborg Castle, Amalienborg Palace, Marble Church, Kastellet, (the Little Mermaid, Nyhavn), Stroget, Bastard Café, Rundetaarn, Tivoli

After yesterday we started the day with the journey from the airport to Copenhagen today we get up when it is 6 in the morning to work for a while before going down to the breakfast room of the Nora Hotel our accommodation in Copenhagen these days, to When it's 9 in the morning, start the Copenhagen route on a day that we have scheduled and that starts at one of the places we most wanted to know, Rosenborg Castle, one of the essential places to see in Copenhagen.

Rosenborg Castle

This palace built in the seventeenth century is one of the most recommended visits to do in Copenhagen, in addition to being one of the city's fairytale places, which we are sure, will not disappoint you.

Rosenborg Castle

Built by Christian IV as a summer residence, the castle soon became uninhabited, for several years later, returning to serve as a home, this time when a fire devoured the Christiansborg Palace in the 18th century and the royal family had to look for a place to move to.

Although you can visit the interior of the castle, touring some of the rooms, if you do not have too much time, it is a visit that can be dispensed with, we did not do it and enjoy only the views of the castle in addition to the gardens, to which you can Enter for free.

Rosenborg Castle

The schedule of Rosenborg Castle depends on the season of the year:
November to April: from 10am to 2pm
May, September and October: from 10am to 4pm
June, July and August: from 10am to 5pm

The ticket price is 105DKK per person and free with the Copenhagen Card.
A good option, if you want to know more about the castle, is to make this guided tour of Rosenborg Castle.

Rosenborg Castle on the route through Copenhagen in one day

From here and when it is practically 11 in the morning we continue with the route of Copenhagen in 1 day, approaching us to the Amalienborg Palace and the Marble Church, two of the most essential places to see in Copenhagen.

Amalienborg Palace

These four palaces, are currently the official residence of the royal family in winter and are surrounded by a central square, where you can see the sculpture of King Frederick V.
The great curiosity is that this palace was not built to be used, but as a place of sporadic residence for guests, but before the fire happened in the eighteenth century that destroyed the palace of the moment, the royal family was forced to find another place of residence, opting for the Amalienborg Palace.

Amalienborg Palace

Note that every day, when the queen is in the palace, the changing of the guard takes place at 11:30 a.m.

The schedule of the Amalienborg Palace is from 11 am to 4 pm from November to April, closed on Mondays and from 10 am to 4 pm from May to October.
The price is 95DKK per person.
If you want to know more about the castle, it is to make this guided tour of the Amalienborg Palace.

Amalienborg Palace Guard

Marble Church

This Lutheran temple, also known as Frederik's Church, can be found right next to the Amalienborg Palace and is known for its large dome 31 meters in diameter, which took over 150 years to complete.

Marble Church

The schedule of the Marble Church is from 10am to 5pm from Monday to Thursday and Saturdays and on Fridays and Sundays from 12am to 5pm.
The entrance fee is free.

As we mentioned earlier, at 11:30 the changing of the guard takes place in the Amalienborg Palace and like us, several groups have gathered here, hoping to be able to witness it, since from what we have read it is quite curious. But unfortunately, when we have been waiting for a while, we learn that today the queen is not in the palace, so the changing of the guard will be later and also not so "spectacular" as it usually is.

So before this setback, we decided to approach the Marble Church and follow our planned itinerary of Copenhagen in one day, heading towards the Little Mermaid, but not before making a stop in Churchillparken, a few meters from the palace, where Kastellet is located, one of the places we don't want to miss in this Copenhagen in one day.

Kastellet

This fort of the 17th century, is an eternal memorial to the victims of the war and was founded by the Danish King Christian IV in the year 1626. Today the buildings that are inside are used for military purposes, but the surrounding area, is one of the green lungs of the city, which many locals use for running and for which we advise you to enjoy a walk, since the views are really interesting, besides being a place of passage if you are going to the famous Little Mermaid in Copenhagen.

Kastellet's schedule is from Monday to Sunday from 6am to 10pm and access is free.

Kastellet

Kastellet Gardens

It is practically 12:30 noon when we leave this fortress, deciding that as yesterday, when we arrived from the airport to the center of Copenhagen and having the afternoon off, we approached the famous areas of Nyhavn, the most famous channel in Copenhagen and the Little mermaid, today it is best to take it with some more tranquility and now make a stop to eat.

In case this is your first day in the city and you are doing the Copenhagen route in one day, we advise you to continue with the walk, approaching the Little Mermaid less than 1 kilometer from Kastellet, and then on the way back, go to Nyhavn, one of the best known images of this amazing city.

After several evaluations of where to eat in Copenhagen, we ended up deciding on one of the most recommended restaurants in the city, Schonnemann, to try the Smørrebrød.
But as usually happens in these cases, when you do not carry a reservation and want to go to one of the most recommended restaurants in the city, when we arrive we find that they have no table, in addition to telling us that there are no more seats left in the whole week, for what we have to keep wanting and wait for the next trip to Copenhagen, to try it.
Seeing that time is coming up, we look on TripAdvisor and see that just 300 meters away is the Simple Raw vegetarian and vegan restaurant, with a really great pint and where after reviewing the menu we ordered sweet potato snacks plus 2 vegetarian bowls, one of curry and another of vegetables, more homemade lemonade for 375 crowns.

Eating in Simple Raw

Without a doubt, super recommended! Not only for the quality of the product, but also for the service.

And so, after charging energy and when it is 3 in the afternoon, we leave the restaurant to see with surprise, that the forecasts of this morning are being fulfilled and it is beginning to drizzle, something that makes us change a little the plans we had planned for the route of Copenhagen in one day.

This is something important and that you should keep in mind and that is that in Copenhagen, the weather is usually quite changing, even when we talk about the same day, so it is interesting to have a plan B or consider the option of exchanging visits that you have assigned to other days of the trip to Copenhagen.

Copenhagen tour in 1 day

We take a few minutes, but seeing that the rain forecast will continue for a while, we decided that it is best to find a place to shelter, being Bertels Kager the best option, a small bakery located in a very central area of Copenhagen where They serve what they say is the best cheesecake in town and that Rubén and Lucy recommended something to remember.

Bertels Kager

Upon entering we already find a blackboard that shows the varieties of the day, usually about 10 options, in addition to the price per serving, which is 55 crowns. We opted for two varieties plus 1 American and one capucchino for 185 crowns.

Bertels Kager Cheesecake

Although we can not say they are cheap, they are really good, so if you have a while and you like cheesecake, do not hesitate !.

It's about 4:30 in the afternoon when we decided to continue with the Copenhagen route in 1 day that we had planned, although the sky is still very cloudy and still sparkling, so we opted to walk along Stroget Street, from the one that we already visited a part yesterday and that is considered as the longest shopping street in Europe (or the world according to where you read it).

Stroget, one of the places to see in Copenhagen

Something that caught our attention when we started preparing this trip to Copenhagen, especially the Copenhagen route in one day, is the amount of recommended cafes and venues in the city.
This led us to many of the visits that we include in the itinerary, to places that despite not being usual options in the planning of trips of a few days, in this case they have had enough weight to include them.
This is the case of Bastard Café, an iconic Copenhagen coffee, in which while you have a drink, you can play more than 1000 table games, which are available on the shelves for your customers.

Bastard Coffee

Initially it may not attract your attention, but we assure you that it is worth approaching, since in addition to the concept, it is amazing to see how coffee is always full of people, who spend hours here playing and also, consuming, something for which We believe, this type of cafeteria, are an essential for the people of the city, who take them as a meeting and leisure center.

A few minutes past 5:30 p.m., now with the day much clearer, when we continue with the Copenhagen route in one day, approaching the center of the Latin quarter to reach Rundetaarn, also known as the round tower from Copenhagen, where we pay 25 crowns per person to visit one of the most symbolic places in Copenhagen.

Rundetaarn or Copenhagen round tower

In the heart of the city we find the Rundetaarn or Copenhagen round tower,

In the center of the city stands the Copenhagen Round Tower (Rundetårn in Danish) a curious monument dating from the seventeenth century and whose greatest attraction, in addition to its architecture, are the good views it offers of the city.
The highlight of this visit, in addition to the incredible views that there are of the city, is its architecture, since the access to the tower is done through an interior ramp, which you go spiraling, until you reach the most high.

Rundetaarn or Copenhagen round tower

This spiral ramp, helped to climb all the astronomical material to the highest part of the tower with cars and today, we can say from experience, it is a much more rested way to reach its highest point.

Ramp of the Rundetaarn or Copenhagen Round Tower

With 35 meters high, the Round Tower is one of the best viewpoints in Copenhagen, so we recommend you to make this visit, whenever you can, on a clear day, as we assure you that the views are really incredible.

Copenhagen views from the Rundetaarn

Views of Copenhagen from the Round Tower

Keep in mind that the ascent to the highest point of the tower is not tired, since it is done through a ramp, although in the end there are some steps, not more than 30, that must be ascended through a very narrow space . It is something to keep in mind, especially if you suffer from claustrophobia.

The Rundetaarn or Copenhagen round tower schedule is from 10am to 8pm from May 21 to September 21 and from 10am to 6pm the rest of the year.
The price is 25DKK per person and free with the Copenhagen Card.

After the visit to the Round Tower of Copenhagen, which we have to say we loved it, when it is just after 6:30 in the afternoon, we continue with the Copenhagen route in one day, enjoying now only as they say , see life to happen, something that we really like to do on trips for free and that allows us to know, little by little, more of the places and cities we visit.

Copenhagen

After 7 pm, we decided to stop for dinner, approaching Paludan's Book & Cafe, a beautiful bookshop where we were yesterday, mixing its space with a cafeteria and restaurant, which we have to say we love.
On this occasion we ordered a sandwich, a pasta dish and a beer for 240 crowns, which give us unforgettable moments in one of the places we liked most in Copenhagen.

Paludan's Book & Cafe

It's 8 in the afternoon when we continue with the Copenhagen route in one day, assessing different options to extend the day, deciding on one of the visits we most wanted to do in the city, seeing that the day has cleared and we have the opportunity to enjoy it as we expected.
This visit is none other than Tivoli, one of the most famous enclaves of the city, which we are sure, no traveler is lost.

Tivoli, the amusement park of Copenhagen

Although it seems a lie, this amusement park, located in the heart of Copenhagen, is today one of the most visited places in the city and tourists, reaching more than four million visitors a year.
As we mentioned earlier, Tivoli is considered one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, considering that its inauguration was in 1843, after King Christian VIII ordered its construction.

Tivoli amusement park

What to see in Tivoli

Although the amusement park is large, it does not have the dimensions of the parks that we usually have in mind, so do not worry about visiting time, since if you do not want to ride any of its attractions, it is easily reachable in 1 or 2 hours, stopping to take pictures and enjoying the views.

- Main door (Vesterbrogade): Without a doubt, the best known symbol of the amusement park, which was built at the end of the 19th century and that today, we can say that it remains practically the same.

Main Gate of Tivoli

- The Saint George Frigate: This huge ship is known, in addition to its architecture, for being next to the Chinese Pagoda and for locating inside one of Copenhagen's best known restaurants.

- Chinese Pagoda: For us one of the most beautiful images of Tivoli, next to the illuminated attractions. Inspired by Chinese pagodas, it locates a restaurant with Chinese cuisine, as well as a theater.

Chinese Pagoda

- Nimb Restaurant: This restaurant stands out for its architecture, which seems to emulate an Arab-style palace, which undoubtedly stands out among the rest of the park's locations.

Nimb Restaurant

Schedules and prices of Tivoli

Due to the weather, Tivoli's schedules are quite wide:

- Sunday to Thursday from 11am to 11pm and Friday and Saturdays from 11am to midnight the months of November to December and April to September.
- The park is closed between January and April and when the weather is not good.

The price of the ticket is 120DKK per person on the weekend, although this changes depending on the dates, if you want to include the pass to the attractions ... etc
If you have the Copenhagen Card the entrance to Tivoli is included.
Another good option is to buy this ticket to the Tivoli Gardens in advance.

Tivoli

In our experience, it is highly recommended to visit Tivoli in the afternoon, something that will allow you to make a very complete route through Copenhagen in one day, then enjoy the park in the afternoon and at night, when it is illuminated and offers truly spectacular views .

It is 11 pm when we say we finish the day of Copenhagen in one day, returning to the Nora Hotel, where after having walked more than 20 kilometers, we fall asleep.

* This route in Copenhagen in one day is complementary to the previous post we publish and the next one, in Copenhagen in 2 days. In case your stay in the city is only one day, it can be interesting to combine visits from our three days, deciding among them, which ones are best suited to your tastes or times.
