2 hours separate Madrid from Morocco, but at some point the plane must break a space / temporary barrier, because when you land in Arab lands what you find is another exotic and wonderful world: Morocco is cool! And part of that charm has its gastronomy. In this post we will talk about the Moroccan gastronomy and we tell you what are the 10 Typical dishes to eat in Morocco. Aiiins how hungry!

Here you can see the restaurants where to eat in Marrakech and the ones we recommend in Fez.

We start with the Moroccan dish probably the most famous in the world: cous cous. Although you will know what it is, we tell you: it is a dish made from wheat semolina with a vegetable and / or meat stew, which is sometimes accompanied by a bowl with broth to be added to the plate. There are as many cous-cous as cooks, in fact in each area of the country it is prepared differently, so it is always a good excuse to order it. It is, without a doubt, one of the most eaten dishes during your trip to Morocco.

But… . Here we dropped the bomb: we didn't eat a cous cous that seemed spectacular to us -_- In general they used to be pretty bland and we were a little disappointed. But as we say, it is almost mandatory to try at least a couple of them to compare.

Curiosity: The name cous cous comes from a Berber word that means "round" and refers to the shape of the wheat semolina from which it is made.

It is the main star dish of Morocco and you will find it almost on any menu. The tajine refers to the typical clay dish where it is cooked, with a curious bell-shaped lid. Put all the ingredients on the plate, cover and simmer for a while. When they serve you the dish is very hot, so you put a wicker tablecloth to protect the table. The tajine can carry the most disparate ingredients: from eggs with tomatoes to fish, meats and vegetables. Of course, spices and khubz bread are never missing to accompany it. It is a delicious stew, for us the richest dish of Moroccan cuisine! But on a couple of occasions it was clear that it had not been cooked directly in the tagine (it was cold and without the requisition in the background), which is not a good sign.

The ones we liked the most were the lamb tagine with plums and almonds, the kefta and egg tagine (riiiiico), the chicken with lemon and the veal with apricots and nuts.

Harira is the most traditional and typical soup in Morocco, with a powerful flavor and a great nutritional contribution. Therefore, it is one of the dishes that is usually consumed most during Ramadan, to recharge energy after the hours of fasting. It is prepared with meat, legumes, flour, vegetables, noodles and spices.

I admit that we had doubts about this dish, and that is that one of the possible ingredients gave us no confidence: pigeon meat. Luckily we read that it is often replaced by chicken meat and we dared with it and very rich! It is like a puff pastry that combines sweet and savory flavors since the ingredients range from the aforementioned pigeon / chicken meat to caramelized onions, almonds and icing sugar with cinnamon. It is certainly a very curious dish that we recommend you try (at least) once in Morocco.

They will not go unnoticed, especially your nose ... The morunos skewers are one of the most typical street foods and cheap bars in Morocco. They are also found in practically all restaurants, so if you read “kebap” on the menu, do not imagine the typical doner, these are meat skewers (from chicken to lamb!), Which are usually accompanied by typical bread and Super good.

We had never heard of this fried potato ball very similar to a croquette / donut before traveling through Morocco, but it did not take long to understand that it is one of the most loved snacks by locals. It can be found in many positions of the bazaars (in Fez there are almost everywhere), and it is very cheap.

It is a simple dish, of which they never fail in the menus of each restaurant. Perfect to snack before the main course and to be shared between two (or more) travelers. The Moroccan salad is prepared with tomatoes, peppers and onion, all fresh and tasty. All ingredients are seasoned with lemon juice, olive oil and salt. They also usually put Moroccan bread to accompany.

It is so typical that we ate it practically at all breakfasts on our trip through Morocco. It is a kind of flat bread, rectangular in shape, which is cooked with butter in a pan and served with honey or jams. Do not expect the texture of a crepe, this is rather hard and crispy, and sooo heavy. But it's delicious!

The best way to help your budget not collapse is sandwiches. In local restaurants or street stalls they can cost around € 1. But they also tend to be pretty good! The most typical are made with baguette bread, stuffed with salad and with some main ingredient, such as tortilla, tuna (canned), meat ...

But we also tried other varieties, for example in round bread, or the taco, which is rather a burrito and that was of death (we loved that of Snack Malak in Fez).

Ou mama! How delicious Moroccan cupcakes. As in the rest of North Africa (and the Middle East) they are delicious (and nothing, but naaaada light). They are usually phyllo pastries, fried tartitas, stuffed with nuts (especially almonds, pistachios and nuts) and soaked in very sweet syrups or honey. Come on, the best way to finish each meal (although NOT the healthiest, of course). But hey… one day is one day! Contrary to what we expect, we did not find too many places to sell them, and the prices were not too cheap.

And the bread… . Mmmmm In addition to being rich and being a must if you travel by car (because of something when you go hungry), bread in Morocco is very cheap! If you find shops, ovens, or bakeries with fresh bread, do not hesitate and buy a few.

The two most typical drinks of Morocco deserve a special mention: mint tea and the juice. Specifically, we advise you to drink liters and liters of tea, or as they call it: Moroccan whiskey (black tea accompanied by sugar and fresh mint leaves) and orange juice (better if it is freshly squeezed). Really: they are the best in the world!

Bad news for beer lovers: being an Arab country alcohol can only find alcohol in hotels and restaurants that have a special license.
