Amsterdam is one of the European cities with more personality. You notice it from the first moment you step on it. Its bikes, its houses, its shops, its museums ... If you plan to visit the capital of the Netherlands, read on: this is our 2-day itinerary in Amsterdam, to get the most out of it.

If you want More information from Amsterdam, visit our GUIDE TO A TRIP TO AMSTERDAM

First impression: free tour!

A good way to break the ice with the city is to join one of the many free walking tours What is there (eye, they are free but it is always good to leave a tip). With the help of a guide you can see emblematic places in Amsterdam, such as the Dam Square (where there is also the Nieuwe Kerk church, the Royal Palace and the National Monument), the controversial red light district (Although the best time to visit is at night), the Anna Frank House Museum and at the same time that you go crazy with your camera, you can soak up the history and curiosities from the city…

If you don't speak English, don't worry: there are several options in Spanish. They usually last about 2.5h.

Amsterdam for foodies, or how to gain a few kilos

After this first date with Amsterdam we bet that you will be very hungry, in that case nothing better than taking you to the mouth any of the city specialties, As the Haring broodje (a raw herring sandwich with pickles and onions), tastes better than it looks and is a low cost option (can be found from € 3). Another of the most typical street food in the city are the chips And how rich they are! We recommend those from the “Frietsteeg” store (Heisteeg 3).

A fundamental stop for any local food lover has to be in one of the many cheese shops from the city. An interesting option is “De Kaaskamer van Amsterdam”, where you can try Typical cheeses like Gouda or Edam and some more curious and peculiar as that of truffles or aromatic herbs. More info.

Two of our favorite Dutch dishes are the bitterballen, delicious round croquettes that are usually served with mustard sauce in most of the Brown Cafes in Amsterdam (another highly recommended foodie experience!), and theerwtensoep, Pea soup, how delicious it is!

Oops we almost forgot a fundamental advice ... if the markets they are your natural habitat and you enjoy them more than a child in a toy store, write this name: “Albert Cuyp Market“, The largest outdoor market in Europe, located in the lively Pijp neighborhood. More info about positions and schedules.

Feed the body and mind

For the mind there is nothing better than museums and believe us, in Amsterdam they are not missing! The only problem is that the time available is not much, so we must choose which one to visit. Our advice? Don't miss out on anything in the world on Van Gogh Museum, one of the prettiest we ever visited and that brings together works such as "Los Girasoles", "Los cadores de potato" or "El Sembrador" under the same roof. A real past.

Other highly recommended museums are the Rijksmuseum, where you can take a leap into the Dutch past and enjoy masterpieces such as "La Ronda de noche" by Rembrandt or "La lechera" by Johannes Vermeer, among others. TheStedelijk Museum of contemporary art. Or the NEMO, the science museum, perfect if you are traveling with the kids in the house.

Plan for the night?

At this point we should already agree that Amsterdam is not just coffee shops, but at least one must be visited, right? There are a thousand and one lists with the best coffee shops in Amsterdam, we are clear about our favorite: Bulldog The First (There are 5 in the city, this is in Oudezijds Voorburgwal, 90). He was one of the first to open its doors (1974) and has a lot of personality.

Don't you know what a coffee shop is? Very simple, although nothing common. They are coffee shops where, next to a coffee, a milkshake, a soda or an energy drink, you can buy and smoke hashish or marijuana. Eye: it is only legal to do it inside these bars!

In coffee shops they don't sell alcohol, but don't panic, you can go to one of the many brown coffees of the city, the typical Dutch taverns that take that name for the color of its wood. Although if there is a place that drives beer lovers crazy (Heineken Experience aside) it is theBrowerij't IJ, where you can try craft beers in a real Dutch mill. More info.

If you are rather urban and have stayed with eager to know more in detail Amsterdam We propose these three plans:

1- Tour Joordan, the Bohemian neighborhood of the city, with its canals, its shops and its charming and surprising atmosphere (do not forget to board a cruise on the canals of Amsterdam, from the water the city is seen from another point of view). We also advise you to lose yourself by the Jewish quarter, one of the most interesting in Amsterdam, where you can learn more about past history in the Jewish Historical Museum or in the Portuguese Synagogue.

2- Pass the hangover in some park, As theVondelpark, the green lung of the city, or theRembrandtpark and the smallestSarphatipark. All near the center.

3- Visit the occasional jumble sale, As the Waterlooplein, the largest in the city where to find bargains of clothes, records, crafts and old books. Another unmissable market is the Bloemenmarkt, the flower market (essential to make some tulip bulbs to plant in your garden, or balcony).

An alternative plan, for the most restless, istake a trip to some town from the surroundings of Amsterdam. Our advice? Choose between these two excursions:

  • Zaanse Schans, an area full of mills that seems taken from a storybook of the last century.
  • Volendam, one of the most beautiful villages in Holland, famous for its fishing port, its colorful houses and its narrow streets.

And if they are both in a single excursion ... better!

And one last piece of advice: come back ... Amsterdam is a great city that deserves to be discovered (and enjoyed) over and over again.
