TREKKING (or rather walking) BY ABEL TASMAN

The trekking through the national park of Abel Tasman It is one of the most famous in New Zealand. Now that we are all trekking-addicts (this goes with a sarcastic touch), how could we miss it?
It is actually a trek that takes several days to complete, its total distance is more than 50 km, although it is possible to reach some intermediate point in a taxi boat from where to return, but the prices of these are quite careless. So our decision (unorthodox, we know), was to start walking and turn around when we were fed up. Neither of us was touched by the barite of patience so the limit of tiredness is quite low ... (Lety's theory is that since she is short she has to take more steps than usual and get tired sooner).

We get to Apple tree bay, making some stop along the way. We continue walking a little more but we understood that the landscapes do not seem to change much as we go forward (really, and saving the distances, we seemed to be on the Costa Brava!) So we turned around and went back where we had come from. Hey, that said it seems that we have not seen anything (however ... according to Lety's steps have been km and km!).

If we go through some pretty cool points and the park is worth a visit, but in reality it was not something that we are going to put in the top10 of NZ. Perhaps if it is interesting to do it in small groups, camping and telling scary stories in front of a bonfire with a sausage punctured on a stick (that if they allow to make fire ...) Eye, our opinion is completely skewed, perhaps in the northernmost part of the walk there are wonderful places that we missed ...

... If after Tongariro we believe that every day is a party, and that cannot be.

USEFUL INFO TO DO A TREKKING AT ABEL TASMAN

The tour

- Official: it is called Abel Tasman Coast Track, which has an initial point in Marahau and ends in Wainui. The total route is 51 km and is usually done in 3 or 5 days. The difficulty is low.

- Ours: we made some 6.5-7 km until a little before Akersten Bay (past Apple Tree Bay) in an hour and a half. There are some points that reach several coves, but the last part is done by the side of the mountain, by a fairly monotonous path. Maybe that's why we turned around so fast.

One day alternatives.

- If you do not mind paying the boat-taxis at all and you are not much of walking, ideally take a taxi-boat from Marahau and get Anchorage (35 NZD), head north on foot and take another boat-taxi in Bark bay (40 NZD) to return to the starting point (or vice versa). The tour is about Three hours to do something less than 9 km. This having the favorable tide in the area of Torrent bay, if it is high we will have to go around 4 km more. You can browse the tides here.- If you mind paying for a taxi boat but you can afford it and you are not very walking, you can take one up Anchorage or Torrent Bay (35 NZD) and head south to the starting point in Marahau, on a route of about 4 hours and 13.5 km (at low tide).

- If you mind paying for a taxi boat but you can afford it and if you are walking, get a taxi boat until Bark bay (40 NZD) very early and start kicking south to the starting point, to travel the 23 kilometers. Here are the friends of UnCambiodeAires.

How much does Abel Tasman cost.
If you do it on the day without overnight, it is free. If you want to spend the night, you have two options: book a night in one of the Huts (see this website) or take your own tent and camp in one of the allowed places, which will cost you NZ $ 12 per night.

Considerations
There is no possibility to buy food on the tour, so take everything you think you will need. There are several water intakes, some of them non-potable and others. The rest of the typical, with special attention to sandflies, which are very good ... If you want to read the experience of our friend Matías who did the entire trekking (smell your majo!) You can see it hereWhere to sleep
We did it in the parking lot of Nelson's i-Site, where you can stop to spend the night after 18:00.
How to get
Here is the map of our tour from Double Bay, on Queen Charlotte Drive, overnight in Nelson and continuing the next morning to Motueka.
