Monastery of Santa María de Valdediós in Asturias

There you find the complex of Valdediós, with a pre-Romanesque church and a Romanesque monastery.

The church of San Salvador de Valdediós, popularly known as the Conventín, is one of the best examples of pre-Romanesque architecture in Asturias, which in itself justifies a getaway to this area of ​​that community.

This small church was finished building in 893 by order of rhey Alfonso III "The Great", and would soon be part of a palatine complex, the king's own place of retreat, and of which there is no remainder.

But the church since 1218 became accompanied by what is now the Valdediós monastery, after the donation of Puelles Valley to Order of the Cister by the King Alfonso IX of Leon.

The monastery was confiscated in 1835, and although in the latter part of the last century there were attempts to be run again by Cistercian monks.

There are two covers that it has.

The main one is formed by three archivolts, but it also has a small cover on the north facade on whose eardrum there is an inscription mentioning the beginning of its construction in 1218, and its author, the teacher Walter.

On your visit you can also see a classicist cloister that replaced the original Romanesque cloister between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Hours Santa María Valdediós

The Visiting schedule of the monumental complex are, from April to September, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The hours from October to March are from 11 am to 1.30 pm.

The ticket prices 3 euros for the visit of Convent and the monastery, and 1.50 euros, just for the Convent. Children between 8 and 14 years old pay 1.25 to visit both monuments, and those under 8 years of age have a free visit.
