Day 1: GIRONA - BOLOGNA

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Today the alarm sounded a little earlier than usual, we have to go to work, like every Thursday, but then, as soon as we leave, today October 11, we finally return after a year, to Italy!! In a few hours we will be in full transfer from the airport to the center of Bologna.
For years, almost every year, at least once, we do a travel to Italia. It's like a ritual, like an obligation and if we don't do it, we seem to be missing something.
The most recent were last year, in January, La Toscana, and in April of the same year we returned, that time to Sardinia
Today's hours have been going very slowly throughout the morning until at 3 in the afternoon, after eating something fast at home, we have set off for Girona Airport.
We fly with Ryanair and although it doesn't make us very funny since we heard the news we heard about their safety, it is well worth taking a risk for a trip to Italian lands 🙂
We leave the car in the parking lot and in less than 15 minutes we are already at the boarding gates, waiting for them to announce our flight.
This time we have come with less time than usual, so we don't have to wait long and time in "no man's land" passes quickly.
We are lucky and the plane to Bologna takes off on time, without problems. In what we do not have so much is the location of seats that we choose. Right next to us, after being comfortably installed, a group appears that seems to have never been mounted on an airplane or that have never left home.
Luckily the flight is short, because more than 2 hours listening to shouts and "silly" jokes would not stand it 🙂 Call me antisocial, but I am little given to the nonsense of "alpha male".
We almost don't realize the time that passes and we get to Bologna after an hour and twenty that the journey lasted from the airport to the center of Bologna.
When not carrying checked bags we go directly to the tourist office before leaving on the left, to ask about transport options to the city.
They give us the option of the aerobus, which seems perfect and much better than the taxi and we ask for another plane, just in case.
Comment, that we as a rule, before traveling we contact by email with the tourist office of the site we are going to and ask for information. After a few days we always have at home the brochures, maps ... etc.
It is something that is great for us to schedule the trip and many times we forget to comment.

The aerobus stop is leaving the Bologna airport on the right hand side, at the end of the Terminal. They indicate it in several posters, but it is information that never hurts and we would have been great not to have to go a couple of laps before finding it.
There is a ticket vending machine, but it has no change. You can only enter the exact coins of the ticket amount. But, as we did, if you do not carry change, you can buy directly inside the bus. The price is 6 euros per person per way.
Anyway, after 15 minutes waiting for the bus that will take us to the Bologna Central Station, which is about 5 minutes walk from our Hotel. While we were inside, we have seen that it began to sparkle, hopefully the weather will last these 3 days at least and give us a truce!
I still remember our trip to Sardinia last year, where it almost didn't stop raining in the 4 days we were.
The intention of looking at the map and checking the stops they are announcing was to get off one stop before Bologna Central Station, which is closer to our hotel, but it has happened to us and we have had to wait to get to the last one, which is the one that connects to the Station.

Recommended travel cards

Remember that in order not to pay commissions and always have the current change we recommend you use the N26 card to pay and the Bnext and Revolut cards to get money at the ATMs. They are the ones we use, They are free and will save you a lot.
You can find more information in this article about the best cards to travel without commissions.

At the beginning, as always when we travel, we go a little lost and it has cost us a bit to find the hotel, Roger's luck that is oriented quite well with the maps, because if it is for me, even at this time we would be looking for him !!
We enter the door of our room at 20.30 in the afternoon, after checking in, ask the breakfast schedule and ask for our usual Wi-Fi connection in the room.
It seems a lie, in the end we have taken 2 hours since we arrived in Italian lands, until we reached the hotel. And that puts that Bologna airport It is only 20 minutes from the city.
We will stay 3 nights at Hotel Nuovo Porto in Bologna, 5 minutes walk from Piazza Maggiore and another 5 from the Central Station.
The rooms look a bit old, but it must be said that everything is very clean.
And it is very hot :)) We have checked if they have the heating on, but no, it is the normal temperature.
We rest just over 15 minutes and see that it is time to go to dinner.
We are looking forward to trying that gastronomy that we like so much and that we miss so much.
We go in search of the Independence Street that connects with the Piazza Maggiore of Bologna and from there we go down until we face the most famous Piazza in Bologna.

Piazza Maggiore. Just arrived from the transfer from the airport to the center of Bologna

We are struck by the atmosphere there is, although it is sparkling and cool.
Although it must be said that this city, with its arcades, is specially designed for rainy days.
The first impression we have of this city is very good. Especially the light, which gives a very cozy feeling.

Overview of Piazza Maggiore

Today we have little time to discover this area, so we only take a couple of laps around Piazza Maggiore, seeing the atmosphere and trying to recognize the architecture that surrounds us.
After a couple of laps, we go straight to look for Pizzeria La Mela, which we have seen recommended in many forums and travel diaries.

It is in a street very close to the Piazza, a little hidden, but with some indications and a map it is easy to find it.
And just enter ... mmm ... what a smell!
We ordered a pizza with spicy salami, a plate of Tortelloni from the house, plus a dessert and coke and water, all for 28.50 '- euros.

Spicy Salami Pizza in La Mela

Tortelloni de la Casa in La Mela

Fruit Cake in La Mela

The price is really good, but the food is better! I think we will return again during our stay in this city.
After dinner, we go for a walk around the square, so as not to stay with the desire and for that need to exhaust the holiday time to the fullest and we go straight to the hotel.

Another panoramic of the Piazza Maggiore

It's almost 11 at night and tomorrow we have a full day of our travel to Italia.
Let's meet Rimini and San Marino !!!
