Taking into account that Bali is one of our favorite destinations in the world, where we have traveled twice, the first as part of the trip to Indonesia in 26 days, in which we were on the Island of the Gods 6 days and the second, in We have been fortunate to enjoy the island for more than a month, staying in a villa with Airbnb in Bali, we want to leave you a selection, of which we believe are the best tips for traveling to Bali, according to our experience.

Passport and Visa to Indonesia

Before and during your trip to Indonesia you must take into account several very important things that refer to your passport and visa:
- The passport must have a minimum validity of 6 months Y 2 blank pages (at a minimum) to travel to Bali.
- The customs forms will be delivered to you on the plane, which you will have to fill out and deliver once you pass the immigration control. In the latter, in addition to the form you can be asked to show airline tickets, reservations, passport ... etc, although this does not always happen.
- Once you pass immigration control, you must go through an X-ray control, then go directly to the visa area.

Immigration forms. KLM to Bali flight

VISA 30 DAYS INDONESIA (BALI)
If your stay in Indonesia-Bali will not exceed 30 days, the visa, which really is an entry permit, is free, so you only have to go to the immigration zone, stand in line and wait for your passport to be sealed.
Remember something very important: in case you want to extend your stay in Indonesia, with this entry permit it will be impossible (see next point).

INDONESIA 60 DAY VISA (BALI)
If your stay in Indonesia-Bali is longer than 30 days and up to 60 days, you can apply for your visa in two ways:

VISA ON ARRIVAL (VOA)
- The first step is to go to the area of Visa on Arrival and manage a 30-day visa (not a residence permit we talked about earlier), with an amount of $ 35, which you can pay in Indonesian rupees, dollars or euros. Remember that if you request the stay permit, only valid for stays of maximum 30 days, then you will not be able to extend it.
- If your stay exceeds 30 days, you must pay a fine of $ 20 per extra day.
- You will need the passport with a minimum validity of 6 months and 2 empty pages.
- On some occasions they request the return flight, so it is not advisable to take a risk and take it reserved.
Moreover, even for what we have been told, there are times when at the Spanish airport, if they see that your return ticket is longer than 30 days of stay, they ask you for the 60-day visa to let you fly, so what could we say is the fish that bites its tail.
- Once you have the 30-day visa, you must go, one week before expiration, to an immigration office or a visa agent where you can process your visa extension. This process can take several days if you do it at the immigration office, since depending on the place they will ask you for photographs, passport, copy of the flights ... etc

VISA FROM THE EMBASSY OF SPAIN
If your stay is going to be more than 30 days but less than 60 days and you have time to manage it from Spain, we recommend choosing this procedure, since according to our experience, it is much faster.
For this you will need:
- Face-to-face:
1. Fill out the form below.
2. Carry the passport (original, not a copy) with a minimum validity of 6 months from arrival in Indonesia.
3. Show a photocopy of the passport home page.
4. Two current passport-sized photos, white background.
5. Show a copy of the flight ticket and itinerary (round trip)
6. Show a copy of the accommodation reservation voucher (first 3 nights).
7. Pay 45 euros

- By mail:

Flights to Bali

Our experience with flights to Bali, it has been on both occasions that we have traveled to the island, with the airline KLM, with whom we have always found schedules according to our needs, in addition to some stops in Amsterdam, which both for schedules and for waiting times, have permitted Enjoy the trip, something we can't always say.

We also have to confess something and that is that the Schiphol airport where it has the KLM base is one of our favorites, since it has countless services that make you wait much more pleasant and short, in addition to an exquisite information service and several things Very important: many comfortable seats, all with plugs, a wide selection of restaurants and also, it has free Wi-Fi!
As you can see, after this, whenever we can choose KLM and Schiphol airport as travel companions.

Economy Comfort with KLM

In addition, if you fly with KLM you can reserve your seat in Economy Comfort category, a class superior to the tourist, in which for a very small amount you have a series of comforts and benefits that we assure you, you will not miss again once the try:
- Additional legroom up to 89 centimeters
- Additional recline up to 18 centimeters. This, like the above, you can not imagine what is appreciated in a flight of so many hours.

Economy Comfort KLM

- In a separate area.
- In the front of Economy Class. Super practical for short stops, as you leave the first of the plane.
- Ergonomically designed.
- Power socket in the seats of Boeing 737, 777, 787 aircraft and in most A330 aircraft. Essential to charge your mobile or laptop.

Economy Comfort KLM

You can choose a category seat Economy Comfort of KLM during the reservation of your flight or after having done it, you just have to follow the steps that tell you how to make the seat selection, through the reservation or at the time of purchase of the flight.

KLM mobile application

Another of the things we love about KLM is its mobile application from which you can control anything related to your flight.
This, on many occasions, is essential when you do not have a computer nearby or if you have any questions or problems on your way to the airport.
Through it, as we say, you can manage any operation, in addition to having all the updated data of your flight.
You can download the application from here.

WhatsApp with KLM

And as a great novelty is the use of WhatsApp. Now KLM notifies you, whenever you want, through this service of any news with your flight, in addition to all the steps you must do before flying: online check-in, departure gate, flight delay and even notify you if it is delayed the luggage.
A service that we have to say, we were very surprised and we also believe that it is super efficient and complete.

Something that we do not want to mention is something that continues to surprise us whenever we travel with KLM and that we still love as the first day: the average age of the team of its professionals is higher than usual, something that says a lot about KLM as a company and that also assures you an incredibly professional treatment, although logically with this we do not mean that young people are not good professionals 😉

Accommodation in Bali

Another of the most important points at the time of travel to Bali It is finding a good accommodation. We know that this is not easy and more in a place like the Island of the Gods, where we hope to find and enjoy the best.
In our case we have tried two options, that of staying in a hotel, on the first trip and then staying in a villa, on the second trip, where we have been on the island for a month.

Another point to consider when choosing the accommodation in Bali, is the location.
After the experience, we have to say that although there are four different areas on the island where you can make routes, if you only want to stay in one of them, for us the best option, it would be to choose an intermediate zone, such as Ubud .
This population, despite being one of the most tourist spots in Bali, has many options, both catering and accommodation, making it one of our favorites.
In addition, Ubud will allow you to leave and enter the city in a fairly fluid way every day. Much more than if you are staying in an area like Kuta, where traffic is constant and it can take more than an hour to leave the city.

If you want to know the southern part of Bali for several days, another option may be to stay in the Kuta or Jimbaran area for a couple of days and thus not have to make large displacements.

Each of the options has its pros and cons, so we leave you a couple of articles that we believe, will help you choose the one that is the best accommodation in Bali.

- Stay in an Airbnb villa in Bali
- Where to stay in Ubud

Best time to travel to Bali

We know that this will not help you much, but today and after being on the island at two different times of the year, we can say that any time is good for travel to Bali and more lately than the time is crazy and the stations are no longer as marked as a few years ago.

For many travelers, one of the places to visit in Bali is the rice paddies and they try to find the best time to see them in all their splendor.
You should keep in mind that in Bali, one of the essential places to visit in Indonesia, there are 3 rice crops annually and these are rotary, so you never follow an order and you can find different landscapes on the island, from the most intense green , to the most incredible yellow, going through the moment when the terraces are completely flooded with water.
That is why to see the best rice paddies in Bali at its best there is no exact time of the year.

That said, we cannot ignore the general recommendations for travel to Bali in a matter of time, so in general we can say that the stations in Bali can be divided in two, the dry season, which usually includes the months of May to October and the rainy season, also known as monsoon, which usually goes from November to April-May, more or less.
Although as we said before, this is not a certain science. Moreover, as an example we will tell you that the first time we were in Bali was in June and it rained more than the second time, that we were one month, between October and November.

How long is it advisable to visit Bali?

Although the tendency would be to say that against better weather, since Bali is a magical destination, if you want to know the essential places to visit in Bali, we recommend you stay on the island for an average of one week.
With this time you can make different routes around the island, in addition to enjoying one or two days of relaxation, something you should not forget in a place like the Island of the Gods.

Although this is the average time we recommend, you can know the island perfectly in less days and of course, as we said before, in more.
We leave you a series of routes in Bali, classified by zones, so you can more or less get an idea of the things to see and do in Bali classified by zones.

- You can see the places we visited in Bali in the practical guide of the trip to Indonesia for free, from the 12th to the 16th, days we were in Bali, touring this magnificent island.

Currency in Bali

The official currency of Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) and its equivalence is approximately € 1 = Rs16,000 (see current exchange here).
You will find 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000 and 100,000 rupee bills, in addition to coins, between 100 and 1000 rupees.

Looking at the equivalence and value of the bills and coins, you can get an idea of the amount of bills that you will carry in the wallet, in addition to the prices of things. Just telling you that a nasi goreng dish in an Ubud warung can cost you about 20,000 rupees. It seems very expensive, right? Well, you just have to do the equivalence to see that it is just over a euro ...

Cards and ATMs. How to pay in Bali?

In general, you can use a credit card in most of the accommodation, restaurants and shops of the most tourist places such as Ubud, Kuta, Denpasar or Jimbaran.
One of the questions you ask us most, especially when we are traveling, is how to get money abroad. To avoid paying commissions and always having the current change, we recommend using the N26 card to pay and the Bnext and Revolut cards to get money at the ATMs. They are the ones we use, They are free and will save you a lot.
You can find more information in this article about the best cards to travel without commissions.

It is always convenient to carry cash, since to pay for taxis, small purchases, tickets to temples and parking, or if you are in any area of the interior, paying by credit card will not be an option.

Something we want to highlight is the number of ATMs, both in Bali in general, and in Ubud in particular. You will see that there are many banks and in each of them, inside, there is a sticker that puts a figure. That number is the ticket on which he will give you the cash and they are usually 100000 rupee bills.
As in most countries, ATMs will not give you all the money you want, since there is a limit per operation, which generally ranges from 10,000,000 to 30,000,000 rupees.
We advise you to take out at Sim Bank or Permata, which allows you to take out 3 million per operation or BNI with 20,000,000 per operation.

Ubud ATMs

Currency exchange in Bali

Of course, another option in Bali is the currency exchange. In the most tourist areas you will find exchange agencies. We advise you to look carefully at the commissions and the change before doing any operation, since in the end they usually have worse change than taking out directly from the cashier.

Malaria in Bali

Although we always recommend going to your vaccination center to consult before any trip, since health is an important enough issue to consult with an expert, we can tell you that today, in Bali there is no risk of Malaria, for what is not necessary to take the name Malarone.
Of course, if you are going to extend your trip to Lombok, it is best to consult, as there are risk areas.

Bali travel insurance

Another of the tips for traveling to Bali It is about health. As we always say, there is nothing better than traveling quietly and for that, nothing better than doing it with good travel insurance. We always travel insured with Mondo, with whom we carry a totally adequate insurance to the needs that we will have on the trip.
Hiring your insurance here with Mondo, just for being a Street Travelers reader, you have a 5% discount.

How to get around in Bali

Another of the big questions we know will assault you when you start preparing to travel to Bali It's how to move around the island.
First and we believe more importantly, it is necessary that you know in Bali public transport is practically non-existent. In the past, it did exist, but at present and having practically the entire car or motorcycle population, it has disappeared.
That is why currently, to move around Bali, there are three options, recommended each of them according to your situation.

Car with driver in Bali

This is one of the most established and also recommended ways to move around Bali, especially if you are going to be on the island for less than a week and want to know all the most important and tourist places.
That is why we recommend that this is one of the forms of transport that values to move around the island, since as we tell you, it is a very valid and also very enriching alternative since in addition to having a driver that will take you to know The most incredible places on the island, you will have a guide that will explain all the curiosities and history of Bali and the places you visit.

That is why one of the best ways to tour Bali, especially if you have few days, is hiring a car with a driver. On our first trip to Indonesia, we toured Bali by the hand of Wayan Astawan, a great professional and a beautiful person, with whom we have continued to maintain contact over the years and with whom we have met again on our second trip to Bali and with whom we have shared many moments, such as airport transfers or visiting Pura Lempuyan, one of the essential temples of Bali.
If you want to contact him you can do it through his email [email protected] or through WhatsApp in the number +62 813-3778-9865. We assure you that you will not regret it.
If it is not available you can book this other car service with driver in advance.

Car rental in Bali

This is another of the options to move in Bali, although we also have to say that it is not the most chosen by travelers nor the most recommended, especially if you are not used to driving outside Europe, since driving in Bali is somewhat and not just for driving on the left.
In our case and being on the island for a month, we decided that this was the best option, since it would allow us to move freely and without schedules through Bali.
We leave you some information and advice about car rental in Bali:
- The price of car rental in Bali varies according to the agency, but in general you can count about 25000 rupees per day, that is about 15 euros / day.
The model we rented was an Avanza, which we have to say, has gone pearly.
- The car has no insurance, so you must pay anything you do, provided it is your fault.
- In general, moving along the most tourist routes, you will need to put about 150000 rupees of gasoline for 3-4 days.
- The full deposit of Avanza is about Rs 350000.

Ubud gas station

- To park in Ubud, the best place is in the football field and along Jalan Monkey Forest.
- In most of the central areas of Ubud, at the time of parking you will see that there is someone who helps you, giving you directions or even taking off the motorcycles on the sides so you can put on or take out the car. You can give him 5000 rupees for help and insurance, they will thank you.
- In Ubud and other cities, there are areas where parking is not necessary, although others do have a fee. This is usually 5000 rupees for the whole day and they give you a ticket.
- As we said before, drive on the left, so take your time to get the road.
- Especially at the beginning you have to go very slowly, without fear, but always driving with caution. We assure you that one day you will be accustomed and drive like a true Balinese.
- In Bali they are very polite and will not put pressure on driving, so do not stress.
- It is a ruler "unwritten", whistle twice, not loud, to warn of anything. When you make a turn, go ahead ... etc
- Always drive without a doubt, but with caution, they are accustomed and will get you around.
- If it rains, reduce speed and above all, drive very carefully.
- You will see that there are hundreds of motorcycles on the road, do not worry, they will dodge you, who you have to be careful with tourists, since they have less idea and go more crazy.
- The areas of Ubud, the north, east and west are much quieter in terms of driving. The south, like the areas of Kuta, Denpasar or Jimbaran are more chaotic, so it is worth having a little experience before going there.
- As we said before in driving, do not hesitate too much for the turns, they are attentive and know how to dodge.
- Look at the signs. Many times even if it says that it is a prohibited direction, the motorcycles do not take it into account and go in the opposite direction. If you do the same as them and follow them, you will probably meet some police and they will make you pay a good fine. That is why the most convenient thing is that you go attentive, not only to the driving of others and signals, but also to GPS, to have all the information available.
- Something to keep in mind is that the average speed in Bali is 30 kilometers per hour, so to make a journey of 40 kilometers, you must count at least an hour and a half.
- In case the police stop you for having committed an infraction (or not), the first thing you have to do is say that you do not speak English. This way you will avoid major problems. Although it has not happened to us, we imagine that what you will be asked for are the papers, make sure you know where they are at the time of the rental and from there, say that you only speak Spanish and thus avoid any other problem that includes a bribe or similar .
- In all of Bali there are many gas stations, so you will not have problems filling the tank. Of course, we advise you not to be in reserve, in case you get caught in a more isolated area.
- Keep in mind that in most gas stations payment by credit card is not accepted, so it is convenient to carry cash in order to at least fill a deposit with a deposit.
- We must take special care and attention when driving at night, especially on motorcycles, as many go without lights and there are even people walking on the road without reflective signage. For this reason and although the average, as we have said before, is 30 kilometers per hour, it is advisable to reduce it a little and thus go quieter and avoid any problems.
- The car parks of all tourist sites have a cost between 2000 and 5000 rupees and give you a ticket. They also usually help you get back on the road.

Car rental in Bali

And finally, we can only tell you that Bali is a constant photograph. Enjoy its landscapes. In every corner there is a new surprise. Driving is an experience and a journey in itself.

Motorcycle rental in Bali

We have not rented a motorcycle in Bali, so we can only give you the same recommendations we have given regarding driving than with the rental car.
What we do know for local people in Bali, is that in the southern area, there is a small mafia with the theme of motorcycle rental, so it is advisable to be alert and above all, rent in a place with guarantees to avoid surprises.

International driving license in Bali

Something essential for drive in Bali is to have the international driving license. You just have to make an appointment and go to the right place.
Needed:
- Official form.
- Rate: € 10.20
- National Identity Document, Passport or Original Residence Card in force.
- An updated photograph, 32 x 26 mm. in color.

Where to shop in Bali (Ubud)

Another of the tips for traveling to Bali, it's about shopping. Even if you are not going to be in Bali for a long time, you probably have the need to buy at some point. Be it drinks, some food or something to snack on the routes you do on the island.
Here you will find several options, among which you can choose according to your needs:

Supermarket

This is the best option, in addition to the cheapest one if you have to buy in quantity. In Ubud you will find 3 supermarkets in which to make the purchase and find all kinds of products and when we talk about all, it is about "everybody": fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, cleaning supplies, toilet, bathroom, kitchen, snacks, drinks ... etc.
And as an extra, if you like incense, in the supermarket Bintang has a fairly wide section in which to make your purchases.

Bintang Supermarket Interior

The three best known are the Supermarket Coco, Bintang and Delta, although there is also another well-known chain, called Pepito Market, which is pretty good.

Coco Supermarket

In most of them you can pay by credit card, free of charge, from a purchase of Rs 100,000.

Bintang supermarket

24 hour supermarket

In Ubud you will find many supermarkets 24h. In the main streets of the town you will not have problems, in addition to the whole island and even in the largest gas stations.
They tend to have slightly higher prices, but nothing excessive and in addition to basic products such as drinks, coffee, toiletries ... etc in some you can find even fruits and vegetables.

24 hour supermarket. Bali

Small family shops

If you want to buy a drink or a snack, not western, you can go to any of the small shops that you will find along the route through any town or even on the road.
They usually have water, some soft drinks and snacks. Above all, if you don't like spicy food, let them know, most snacks usually bite and quite a bit.

Small family shop

Bakeries

Something we discovered at travel to Bali This last time it was the bakeries.
Although breakfast is already included in most accommodations and if you are not many days on the island you probably eat and eat dinner in a restaurant or warung, you have the possibility to buy bread, baguettes or even ciabatta bread, in bakeries.
In addition, some of them, such as the Deli that is in Pizza Bagus, have Italian sausage, which they cut at the moment and tomatoes, so that one night you can make a good plate of bread with tomato and sausage and have dinner perfectly.
The prices are roughly 15,000 rupees for the baguette and sausage, varying according to the one you choose, about 52000 rupees per 100 grams.
In supermarkets, the sausage usually costs about Rs 25,000 per 100 grams, but it is vacuum packed and not as good.

Shopping supermarket in Bali

Something about what we do want to make special mention in Bali is about bargaining. Here you will find stores where prices are fixed, such as supermarkets or clothing or handicraft stores that are more exclusive and also stores, usually smaller ones or markets where bargaining is part of the sale.
We understand that on many occasions, we get so much into the paper, that we forget in some way what we are haggling and even how much we are doing it.
It is worth paying attention to that and it is that we believe that it is not worth reaching or crossing certain limits, especially for the seller, since what for us does not represent anything, for them we have to be aware that it is their job and can represent a lot.

It is convenient to be respectful, to enter the bargaining game, but always with respect. As we were once told in Bali, "The best way to make a good purchase is to pay what you think is worth".

Where to eat in Bali (Ubud)

Something very important and what we pay close attention to travel to Bali it is to its gastronomy and especially to where to eat in Bali or Ubud.
Although you have hundreds of options and on many occasions it is best to get carried away by the senses and intuition, we wanted to leave you some articles in which we talk about gastronomy in Bali and those that are for us some of the best places in Ubud for both Enjoy your meal, like some coffee shops where you have a good time tasting an incredible fruit juice or excellent coffee.
