Day 12: Meteora - Sunset at Cape Sounion or Sunion in Greece - Port of Piraeus

Today we have a most complete day before enjoying a sunset at Cape Sounion in Greece, which we are sure, will be the perfect farewell to the route we have made through the continental zone on this trip to Greece in 32 days.
But before and considering that the journey to Piraeus will take us approximately four hours, we decided to say goodbye to these last days, which have led us to visit the Meteora Monasteries and discover one of the essential places to see in Greece.

So for the last time and after having breakfast at the Hotel Doupiani House, our accommodation in Kastraki these days, we loaded the car with our luggage and returned to that stretch of road of no more than 7 kilometers, which has given us so many surprises and which has allowed us to know all the places to see in Meteora most important.

Meteora Road

As we mentioned in the previous posts, in which we speak more Meteora, this panoramic road is undoubtedly the best way to know this incredible place, which after 3 days, has become one of our Greece's favorite places for free, which we are sure, we will never forget.

Meteora monasteries

Panoramic of Meteora

Although our idea is to make only the route on the road without stopping, as we expected, this is impossible and we stop again in each and every one of the points from which we have views of the 6 monasteries that can be visited, perhaps in an attempt to take us one last memory, both in the form of a photo and in our retinas, something that we get again, making multiple stops, including a couple of coffees that we enjoy in one of the viewpoints, again, in front of views that seem taken from a movie.

Meteora monasteries

And so they give us about 12 noon when we decided to start the journey, leaving the moment of food for when we make a stop halfway and thus also take the opportunity to stretch our legs and make the journey less heavy.
Although the journey from Meteora to Athens or Piraeus can be done by local roads, we decided to take the highway just as we did the day we arrived after visiting the Oracle of Delphi, paying at the end 7 tolls on the road, for 19.40 Euros in total and a full tank of gasoline for 50 euros.

A few minutes past 1:30 when we decided to stop to eat at the same place where we were the other day, which is a fairly large restaurant where many buses stop and where we ordered a couple of fish dishes, which by the way are great, with potatoes for 22 euros, taking the surprise that the cashier remembers us and makes a reduction of three euros, in the total of the account, thus saving us coffees.
There are a few minutes to 2:30 when we continue our way to Cabo Sounion, passing by the Port of Piraeus, which is where we will stay tonight, to begin tomorrow the second stage of this trip, which will take us to Mykonos.
Although initially Cabo Sounion was not on our list of essentials, we have to say that it was thanks to Instagram, that we ended up including this stop, since there were not a few followers who recommended us to watch the sunset from there, something that after the experience, We can only thank and recommend, since it is one of the most incredible sunsets we have been lucky to live.

We arrive when it is six in the afternoon at Cabo Sounion, after 6 hours of travel, including a stop to eat, and we decide that before going to the archaeological site, where the Temple of Poseidon is, it is best to go to dinner at a small restaurant, the Taverna Elias Fish, which is next to the sea and is the second most recommended in the area, where we ordered a plate of grilled octopus, squid, spicy cheese entree water and beer for 31 euros, which we have to say that although they are not the best we have eaten, the location is incredible, both for being next to the sea and for the views of the Temple of Apollo, so it is more than recommended if you want to make a stop in this area .

It is 7:30 in the afternoon, just over an hour from the time of sunset, when we go to the parking lot of the archaeological site of Cabo Sunión, where we park for free right at the entrance and access to what will become one of the most incredible places in the world, from which we have been lucky to enjoy a sunset.
