Munich is one of the most essential cities to see in Germany thanks to its historic center, which revolves around the fantastic Marienplatz, one of the places you cannot miss in the city.
In addition to its elegant and historic buildings, the city has a great cultural offer in the form of museums, well-kept parks in which to take a walk, old churches, a lively nightlife and a typical German cuisine, in which sausages stand out and the big beer mugs.

Based on the experience of the time we spent in the city during our trip to Bavaria in 4 days, we have made a practical guide to know the best of Munich in one day. We start!

How to go from the airport to the center of Munich

The best ways to get to your hotel or the city center from the international airport, located 28 kilometers from Munich, are the following:

  • Train: The S1 and S8 train lines leave every 10 minutes from the airport and will take you to several stations in central Munich in just over half an hour. The price of the ticket is about 12 euros and it is recommended for one euro more to buy the one-day pass, which includes this transfer. Trains are operational from 4 in the morning until 1 at night.
  • Bus: The Lufthansa Airport Bus leaves every 15 minutes and will take you to the Central Station in 45 minutes. The price is 11 euros and the schedule is from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
  • Cab: For a price of about 50 euros it can be a good option if you stay away from a train or bus stop.
  • Private transport: With a price higher than the taxi, it is the most comfortable option since a driver will wait for you at the exit of the airport, with a sign with your name, which will take you to your hotel. You can book it here.

For more information on the transfer you can check this post on how to go from Munich airport to the center.

Munich guide in one day

Is Munich route in one day Start early in the morning with a pleasant walk through Englischer Garten or English garden, our favorite green space in the city. This immense park, which we recommend visiting the part closest to the historic center, has a very original place where the Eisbach river forms a wave of a meter high, which many surfers use to practice.
In addition to this particularity, the typical design of the English gardens that unites lakes, forests and sculptures in a harmonious way, give it a special charm to walk, especially with the colors of the spring and autumn leaves.
In good weather, we recommend you to have a beer in one of its Biergarten, typical Bavarian terraces. Some of the curious buildings found in the park are the Chinese Tower, the Japanese Tea House and the Greek-style building Monopteros.

Englischer Garten

When you leave the park towards the center you will find Odeonsplatz and the Hofgarten garden, two other places to visit in Munich. Hofgarten's small and beautiful Renaissance garden draws attention to the central building of the Temple of Diana while Odeonsplatz, a square surrounded by historic buildings, rivals beauty with the Marienplatz. Among the most prominent places in the square is the Feldherrnhalle monument and the Teatinos Church, with an impressive baroque decoration inside.

Odeonsplatz

The route of Munich in one day Continue with the visit to the Royal Palace or Residenz, considered the largest palace in Germany. This huge building of 1385 impresses with its rooms decorated with beautiful tapestries, among which the Treasury, the imperial hall, the court chapel, the Antiquarium and the Cuvilliés Theater stand out. A good option to learn more about the history of the palace and not miss anything is to book this guided tour in Spanish.
After visiting the Palace you can approach the famous Hofbräuhaus brewery to eat a plate of sausages with a good beer mug, one of the best things to do in Munich. This brewery, one of the oldest in the world, has a sad stage when Hitler used it to give speeches while forming the Nazi party.

Hofbrauhaus Brewery

Munich was one of the cities most involved in the Nazi movement and you have several buildings where the traces of that tragic era are still present. A good option to explore these places and learn more about history is to book the Third Reich tour with a guide in Spanish, considered one of the best excursions in Munich.

The afternoon of Munich in one day, continue with the entrance to the spectacular Marienplatz in which we are sure, when you see the facade of the New Town Hall, in a neo-gothic style, you will be speechless. Also in this building when the 11, 12 and 17 hours sound, you can see a magnificent carillon with mechanical figures that recreate scenes from the history of Munich.

New Town Hall on the Marienplatz

In the square there is also the building of the Old Town Hall with a beautiful medieval interior, the great Column of Santa Maria and the Fountain of Fischbrunnen, which we recommend not to miss.
Although you can climb the tower of the New Town Hall, we advise you to climb the tower of the Church of St. Peter, from which you will get incredible views of Marienplatz and the old town of Munich. You can also visit the interior of the church where the skeleton of Santa Munditia covered by gold and precious stones rests.

Views from the Church of San Pedro

When leaving the church you can walk to the door of Isar, one of the 4 doors that gave access to the walled city in medieval times, located in the Isartorplatz and still retains frescoes and the main tower of that time. After seeing the door you can return to the center until you take the pedestrian street of Neuhauserstrasse, full of shops and department stores, in which we recommend you stop at the beautiful facade of the Hirmer Stammhauses, visit the old Jesuit church of San Miguel and buy yourself a Bretzel in some street stall.

Before arriving at Hirmer Stammhauses you can turn down one of the adjacent streets to see the huge Munich Cathedral known as the Frauenkirche.

Hirmer Stammhauses

Neuhauserstrasse will take you to the popular Karlsplatz, a square where another of the old access doors to the wall and the impressive Courthouse, with a steel and glass dome.

To finish the Munich in one day In the best way, we recommend you do it with a traditional dinner at the nearby Zum Augustiner in which you can not miss the pork knuckle and the apple strudel, which are delicious.
