Eduardo Kobra He is one of the most famous urban art artists in the world and rightly so. Its extraordinary murals usually touch social themes, and also its peculiar style, dividing the paintings into geometric shapes and using lots of colors, is recognizable to the naked eye. To us they seem authentic past. If you are passionate about street art, in New York you will be able to enjoy it to the fullest: around the city there are countless buildings used as canvases by street artists. But without a doubt, the murals of Kobra are the best. Or at least for us, we saw almost everyone. The artist spent 5 months giving life to many streets of New York, with his project "Colors of Freedom", which includes 18 very colorful murals, with social burden and messages of peace. We start with one of the most terrifying facts, if not the most, in the history of the city. In this mural the protagonist is one of the firefighters who worked piece by piece during the 11S attack. The idea is to pay tribute to these anonymous heroes who do so much for the community.

In the same block, just a few meters from the previous one, you will see another mural. Does the face look familiar? Sure, it's Albert Einstein pedaling! The author wants to break a spear in favor of the integration of the bicycle into the chaos of the city. And no one better than Albert Einstein to represent him, because his is the famous phrase "Life is like riding a bicycle, to maintain balance, you have to keep pedaling."

In the middle of Midtown is this Kobra that represents the artist Roy Lichtenstein throwing the message of "Peace". This author is famous for having created a peculiar artistic style that, and here Kobra is "borrowing", even if only in one half of the mural.

This is a true past: it is the “kobrian” version of Mount Rushore, where the faces of some of the most important presidents of the country are sculpted. In the mural instead, the faces are from artists that Kobra greatly admires: Andy Warhol, Frida Hahlo, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat (of those last two even includes an artistic reference ... the typical Haring dolls and a dinosaur with a crown from JMB). Also at your feet there is a super typical Diner where you can stick a good brunch.

This mural pays tribute to two key figures in the history of mankind in terms of tolerance and love for others: Mother Teresa of Calcula and Gandhi. This mural can be seen from the High Line, although it is worth approaching down and admire it well.

As we have seen in another mural, Kobra is a big fan of Einstein, and left another tribute for him in New York. He is in Chelsea and takes inspiration from the famous photo where Albert sticks his tongue out. Here the astrophysicist is caught infraganti writing with a spray a phrase on the wall: "We love NY²". Obviously squared! We can not agree more.

It's a cinematic nod to the legendary Star Wars movie series. We see C3PO raising a sign with the characteristic letters of Star Wars, but claiming the fine of wars (not those of the stars, those of our own planet). We did NOT see this (google photo).

The United States is (was it?) The country of freedom, the promised land for many and Ellis Island, the island where thousands and thousands of people passed before setting foot in New York. It is the most palpable symbol of immigrant hope. This gigantic mural represents 5 different people, of different races and origins, but with a common dream: to start a new life. For us it is one of the prettiest.

Next we see the portrait of a woman dressed in a jacket and with a headscarf. The name "Soulphia" is that of a project that helps homeless women, giving them training so they can dedicate themselves to teaching English to other people who need it. This way they are given an opportunity to improve their lives. We did NOT see this (google photo).

Is there anything more New Yorker than the Statue of Liberty? Kobra knows it well and in a country where the president himself wants to lift a wall, he thought about putting a Mexican hat on the symbol of the city. Isn't it great?

It is one of the most striking and beautiful murals we saw. Several members of the sadly famous "club of 27" appear, artists dead at the age of 27. Do you know them all? From left to right you will see Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Jimmy Hendrix and Amy Winehouse.

A mural that pays attention to the problem of weapons and adolescents, which in the United States has been at the center of criticism many times.

Mind you, urban art, as you know, is an ephemeral and changing art. We wrote this post in April 2019 but by the time you go there may be no longer murals (hopefully not :-p) or there are new ones. We will try to update the post but keep it in mind 😉

One tip: the ideal is to point the locations of the Kobra murals on a map and when you visit the area in question, get to know it. We did it that way and it was very cool. Doing all the locations in the same day is crazy. In addition you do not need to see them all, but believe us: live they are even more beautiful and impressive, so try to know at least 2 or 3!
