The holbox island it was the last stop of our trip through the Yucatan Peninsula, and often final climax! The truth is that the island is a pass, those places where you notice that you are at ease, with some special vibes. Although we had the bad luck of finding a half-flooded Holbox with the waters of a "beautiful" chocolate color. Still, we thoroughly enjoy 3 days on the island and we do not see the time to return to enjoy it as it deserves. Next we tell you 15 things to see and do in Holbox. But first let us tell you something ...

... The best thing about the island, for us, is its roll. Away from the hustle and bustle of the Riviera Maya, this Mexican corner still maintains a clean and candid soul (and hopefully it stays that way forever). The roads are not paved, there are no tall buildings, there are no cars (the most common means of transport is the bicycle, and the most powerful is the golf cart!). Holbox has a green soul and its ecofriendly vision Conquer all who visited it.

1. Relax in a hammock on the beach. Yes, the hammocks hanging on sticks inside the sea are one of the most famous images of the island. You can already imagine that with the Instagram boom they have become a magnet for travelers: hammock you see, hammock you want to try. And obviously, give yourself all possible and imaginable bathrooms!

2. Eat one lobster pizza. Yes, you heard right! It is one of the gastronomic specialties of Holbox. They say that the best is eaten wherever it was invented, in the Edelyn Pizza. We liked it, obviously, it is not the typical Italian pizza, but the truth is that we ate it with desire. A large pizza costs 500 pesos (about € 23) and is eaten quietly between two people. Tip: do not go to the rush hour because it is usually full, and better go up to the terrace on the first floor.

3. Holbox is famous for its sunsets, so try not to miss the daily appointment with the sunset (better if before you go to buy some cool chelas by the supermarket).

4. After enjoying the epic sunsets of the island, give yourself a loop through the center: around the square they put on street vendors And the environment is guaranteed. If you still did not, try a nutella marquee (the original recipe also includes cheese ball, but for our taste it is better without).

5. Make one street art route: All you have to do is go through the dusty streets of the island and look at the buildings, as many of them were used as true canvases.

6. One of the main things to do in Holbox is the road to Punta Mosquito. We tried to get there, but the roads were full of huge puddles and it was impossible for us. It is certainly one of the great reasons why we want to return to Holbox.

7. On the other side is Cayo Coco, another essential place to see in Holbox. There you can enjoy an incredibly beautiful beach, either after a long walk from the village or (our recommendation) after arriving by golf car, the most frequent means of transport in Holbox.

8. Take a Cocktail at Alma Bar, where you can also take a dip in the pool (it has sun beds) overlooking the sea. It is located on the terrace of the Hotel Villas Tiburón. Price of cocktails: 100 pesos (€ 4.5).

9. Buy one mexican souvenir skull. You will find them in practically all the shops of the town. We take a few home with us, and every time we see them we want to return to Mexico!

10. Take a selfie with the “Holbox” sign, located on the main beach, at the dock's dock. It is a good memory of your stay on the island.

11. Another of the great attractions of this Mexican island is that in its surroundings, between May and September, you can see whale sharks, the largest fish in the world (between June and August see them is virtually guaranteed). For what they told us the tours are responsible, they include boat transportation and swimming with these incredible animals, they do not feed them or interfere with their normal behavior. Apparently only 2 people can swim with the whale shark at the same time, accompanied by a guide. The price is around 2,500 pesos (about € 115).

12. If you do not travel during the whale shark season do not worry: there is a tour interesting all year leading to meet 2 nearby islands and a cenote (Isla de la Pasión, Isla Pájaros and Cenote Yalahu). The best part of the tour is that it mixes the beauty of the surroundings with animal sightings (both birds, flamingos and, of course, fish). Tours depart daily and cost about 300 pesos (about € 14).

13. Give yourself a whim staying at Villas HM Palapas del Mar, on the beachfront and with a pool (the suites have a private pool, breakfast and wonderful facilities). Cheap, cheap is not, but if you can afford it, don't think about it. If you are, like us, a common mortal, that you know that there are many cheap accommodation options in Holbox, we stay at Casa Ohana and we recommend it!

14. Holbox is one of the few places in the world where, at night, you can attend an unforgettable show: the bioluminescence. What exactly? Basically it is a phenomenon whereby marine plankton generates light. Come on, if you bathe or remove the water from the sea, it lights up! The best months to see it are June, July and August (although if you are lucky you can see it even until January). Of course, if the day is full moon, bad business! To see the bioluminescence there must be total darkness.

15. To say goodbye to the island nothing better than toast with a very fresh margarita in the Viva Zapata restaurant. And there and try some of their fresh fish specialties, like shrimp zapata or lobster medallions. We celebrated our last Mexican night here and it was a great success: everything was great.

Extra Advice: Don't do a day tour. We saw that they offer them from the Riviera Maya and we think it's a real donkey! First, because it is far and you will spend too much time between going and returning on the same day. And second because, as you can see, there are many things to see and do in Holbox and it deserves to be discovered for several days. We stayed 3 nights and it was a correct duration, although if you want to stay a week nothing happens, huh!

Do you know more things to see and do in Holbox? We, as you can imagine, are looking forward to returning (and this time we will not match the sarjezo hehe).
