If you want more information of Venice, visit our GUIDE TO A TRIP TO VENICE

Our Costa Neo Riviera departed from Venice in the direction of the Greek islands and, although we have already kicked the Venetian alleyways well, we never tire of visiting the most charming city in the world. We needed to know the Rialto Market, And that was our first destination.

From the cruise terminal we opted to catch the People Move to skip the part of the highway bridge. Leave at Piazzale Roma, 300 meters from where you take it (it is actually a bit of a scam for the € 1.50 it costs and you can walk perfectly). From here you can cross the Calatrava Bridge and go directly to the train station (or Ferrovia) or continue on the right side and cross the little park, to enter the narrow streets of Venice. We, along with a couple that we just met on the cruise, more handsome than the pesetas, opted for the latter and in about 40 minutes we were at the Rialto Market.

A few meters from Rialto bridge is this picturesque market, which has been assembling and disarming every day since 1097! First the vegetable and fruit stands are located, and later, under the roof of the Loggia of the Mercato del Pesce (a building built a little over 100 years ago with neo-Gothic Venetian style) stands for fresh fish. This is the most interesting part, the variety, although the market is not too big, it is infinite and the quality of this fish is exceptional, it is not in vain that this is where most of Venice's restaurants and also the surrounding area buy every morning what which will then serve at their tables. Mmm, how delicious 🙂

Although at the time we arrived, about 11 in the morning, there were only a good number of tourists and a handful of locals. However, the visit is almost mandatory (and the surroundings are WOW).

We take the opportunity to make a stop at Mercá, one of our favorite bacari and we offer at the beginning of the cruise with a couple of spritz. Yuppiyuppidupaduppi!

Long live the spritz !!

We put the “walk” mode ON again and we reached the San Marco Square. Do you know how much a cappuccino costs on the terrace of one of its bars? Well, between € 9 and € 12. You dare? Nah ... save that money to have a drink on the cruise if you don't have the "all inclusive", or for a few capuccinos anywhere else: -S

This day we bought our first selfie stick and it shows. Of course, we have not used it again XD

On the way back to the cruise we used our little feet again, the healthiest and most economical way to move (although we care more about the health of our pocket) and prepare to sail! But a great surprise awaited us ... the cruise will surround Venice, so we grab our cameras and go on deck, and there, feeling like Jack Dawson and Fabrizio on the Titanic, we greet the curious passers-by who watch as a metal monster walks away from Venice on its Grand Canal. And we saw Venice like never before ...

Useful information

:: Where to hire cheap cruises?

You can do it directly with the shipping companies or look for online travel agencies or physical branches that have good agreements with them and take out very attractive packages. Although we recommend thespecialized cruise websites that gather all the offers of the market, like this one.

:: How to get from the cruise port of Venice to San Marcos square?

There are three ways to get to the center of Venice from the cruise port:

- Vaporetto: the fastest but most expensive. The vaporetto station is in the same cruise terminal, to go to San Marco take Line 2 and takes about 20 minutes. To return the same. The price is € 8 one way or € 15 round trip. There is also a daily ticket with which you can take unlimited vaporetti in one day for € 20 (interesting if you want to do the excursion to Murano, Burano or Torcello for free, although recommended only in the case that you already know Venice and have a lot of time available ).

- Walking: the slowest but cheapest way. You can walk to Piazzale Roma (the transport epicenter of Venice), crossing a bridge along the highway (there is a sidewalk and it is not dangerous). From there you can go to Rialto (about 40 minutes) and to Plaza San Marco (another 30 minutes) through alleyways. Do not worry about losing yourself, there are directions to Rialto and San Marco to go and to Ferrovia and P.Roma to return, in almost every corner.

- People Mover: it is an elevated tram that leads to Piazzale Roma and will allow you to save the first leg by walking. The price is € 1.50 each way and the station is in the same cruise terminal, at the end of the whole.

Perhaps an interesting way to visit Venice by cruise is to walk first to San Marco Square (if you want to skip the first section with the People Mover), and from there back with a vaporetto.

:: How much does a gondola ride cost?

In Venice there are different places where you can take the gondolas, the "fixed" prices offered on informational posters is € 80 for a journey of about 45 minutes, although try to haggle if you are determined to do so, maybe you can get a discount.

:: Do you have little time but want to see as much as possible?

Here you have all the activities to do in Venice.
