POSTONJA CAVES: THE UNDERGROUND SLOVENIA

Postonja caves are one of the essential stops on a trip to Slovenia. The reason is simple: the more than 20 km that form them are sensational ... at least the 5 that can be visited! The caves are World Heritage and today they are the most visited in Europe.

As soon as you enter you will freak out, at least we freak out ... they make you ride in a little train that in a journey of about 2 km (10 min) will take you in the bowels of the cave. For a while we seemed to be in Port Aventura, only that the sets were much more real! Once the mini-train journey is finished, a guide awaits us (which we will share with a large group of people) and a route of 1 km up (little), down (little) and rectilinear (quite).

Apart from stalactites and stalagmites in the Postonja caves you can see incredible formations like the so-called 'spaghetti' that, in effect, look like thousands of spaghetti coming down from the roof, rooms and galleries filled with limestone formationslike the one that looks like a chicken (and very dear to all Slovenes as it has the shape of their country) or as a huge block, bright white, which is one of the symbols of the caves.

Although the big star of the cave is him: the Proteus, something like a hybrid between a salamander and an albino penis. Hey, I never saw an albino penis, but it has to be something very similar (yes, no legs eh!). Proteus is also known as thefish men since he can live, like a man, until 80 years old. The truth is that Proteus does not have a very entertaining life: he is totally blind and eats once every 10 years, that is, he never gets blind from food ... notice the paradox! Proteus is not the only inhabitant of the cave: down there live more than 80 species of animals (bats, spiders, snails and other rare bugs).

It always gives a certain respect to be in the depths of the earth ... but much more than normal it gave us when suddenly all the lights of the caves left and you know that there is a Proteus albino penis ready to sneak into your backpack. Fortunately, the light returned after a few seconds and there were no major scares.

The last stop before getting back on the train is the call concert hall, which is supposed to have an incredibly good acoustics. I say 'it is supposed' since in our group nobody dared to sing any song (bland!) Although we almost preferred it: to see if with the vibration of the notes a stalactite decides to fall and focuses us in full head. No no no. For music you operate them! Right there we meet the Post Office most grotesque (ha ha grotesque in a grot ha ha. Ok stop) in the world: in the Postonja cave you can send postcards with a special stamp that will make the geeks happy!

It was certainly an interesting visit and another confirms that Slovenia is much more than a green country in the form of a hen although another great surprise was coming ... Predjama Castle, but we will talk about this in the next post 😉

USEFUL INFO

How to get: We visited the caves during the best day tour of Slovenia although if you travel for free you may want to know that there are direct buses from Ljubljana. They take about an hour and cost about 4-6 €. If you travel with your own car (the best option) it will take about 45 minutes from Ljubljana (they are about 53 km away) and you will have to go on the A1 / E70 motorway.

Price: the entrance to the Postonja caves costs € 22.9

Schedule: you can see them here

Tips: Do not forget to go warm because the average temperature inside the cave is about 10 degrees. It is possible to rent a kind of coats (similar to those of hobbies) for € 3.5.
