Attention: it is not advisable to read this post on an empty stomach because otherwise it is likely that you end up docking the fridge, leaving it more empty than a library on August 15. Italy is the homeland of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Rafaello (and I don't talk about ninja turtles), Benigni, catenaccio, Sophia Loren, public toilets without toilet paper and good food.

Mind you, when we say good food we don't just mean pasta and pizza: in Italy you eat great in fancy restaurants or on the same street. On the street? Well yes: Italian street food is good, beautiful and cheap. You do not believe it? Man of little faith ... we are going to take you around 10 Italian cities (from north to south) showing you the best street food of Italy that you would have to try and that they would change your mind.

VENICE: CICCHETTI

We always say it: in Venice you have to run away from tourist menus and fast food. What a good venerate would do would go "to cicchetti." Go to what ?! To understand each other, they are skewers or tapas that are found in the “osterie” of the most romantic city in Italy. The best are fried meatballs, cuttlefish and squid or sarde in saor, the most traditional Venetian dish.

GENOA: FOCACCIA

The focaccia could well be the ugly cousin of pizza: it seems sad, poor and bland. But that is superficially, huh! After the first bite you will realize that many times appearances are deceiving and the simplest is the most tasty ... waiter: one of focaccia!

RIMINI: PIADINA

Each snack of piadina will bring you a little closer to happiness. What is it? The piadina is a flat bread filled with the ingredients that you prefer (in case of doubt try the speak and fontina). There is also a sweet version like nutella, which you know, is always a good choice.

FISHING: ARROSTICINI

It is stepping on the Abruzzo region and in the atmosphere the smell of arrosticini begins to be noticed. With these skewers of grilled lamb meat you will make your mouth water: be careful with the puddles you leave!

FIRENZE: PANINO AL LAMPREDOTTO

A dish with disparate opinions: there are those who love it and who hate it. Possibly who hates it never got to try it. The panred al lampredotto is nothing more and nothing less than a sandwich stuffed with cow guts. It may sound disgusting and look dubious, but it is delicious, which is what it is, right?

ROME: PANINO WITH THE PORCHETTA

Ah the porchetta, if it didn't exist it should be invented. A sandwich with porchetta is what your body needs after a tiring day, a night of partying, an afternoon studying, a winter, spring, summer or autumn day. I mean always.

NAPOLI: PIZZA

The best pizza in the world is in Italy and the best pizza in Italy is in Naples. My friend Ciccio, 100% authentic Neapolitan, says it is so because of the water in the area. Anyway, if you try a pizza in Napoli you can die easy. But beware, there have been cases of tourists who returned to their countries went crazy looking for the true pizza ... they say they went crazy with "bad pizza".

BARI: PANZEROTTI

The panzerotti are the Italian version of the empanadillas (or are the empanadillas the Spanish version of the panzerotti?) Although in reality they do not have much to do, they only look like outside but inside they are different worlds ... the most typical is that Stuffed with tomato, basil and mozzarella. An entire institution in Puglia.

PALERMO: ARANCINI

These fried balls made of rice, tomato sauce, peas and mozzarella are the end of the world. Have you ever eaten them? Bad, very bad: take a flight to Sicily right now and remedy your mistakes.

EVERYWHERE: ICE CREAM

You are in Italy friend ... here is the best ice cream in the world (as long as New Zealanders say otherwise), so after each meal do not think about it: ice cream cone forever and ever (yes, avoid taking it in tourist places , because they could freeze your blood from how expensive it is!)

These are 10 proposals, but you know that in the streets of Italy you can find many traditional dishes and at very good prices such as tramezzini, panino with mortadella, pasticcini, granitas, suplís ... and of course: pasta and pizza, which In the end we are carbohydrate-addicted even if we find it hard to admit it.

What is the best for you? street food of Italy?

Buon appetito!
