Day 1: GIRONA - TALLIN

April 6, 2012

Ringgggg! Good morning everyone! It's 4 in the morning and today is a great day for us, today we are leaving trip to Tallinn and Helsinki and in a few hours we will be leaving the airport to downtown Tallinn.
We have been waiting for this day for months, the truth is that we already needed vacations ... and this getaway will come to us before our “long” trip this year.
Several months ago we decided to spend these holidays in Estonia and combine them with a small trip to Helsinki because looking for flights to Tallinn, we found some that fit our budget perfectly.
Our flight leaves at 6.55 in the morning so shortly before 5 we leave for Girona airport.
Casualties of life, a friend also flies today, but with another destination, so we go together and so we spend the early morning accompanied, whether you want or not be better supported 🙂
We leave the car in the parking lot and once the suitcase has been checked in, we will have a good, well-loaded coffee to finish waking up in the morning and have our last talk before we separate, each one going to his destination.

Almost without realizing it, it is time to embark, the truth is that we have not been waiting for anything long. The airport is full, it shows that they are vacation days.
We embark without problems and we cannot say anything more that after 3 hours we woke up about to land.
The truth is that this early morning had to have something good ... :) And has been flying to Estonia almost without realizing it.
As the plane takes land at the airport in Tallinn we see through the windows that it rains, but more than water it looks like water-snow. I cannot deny that I have a smile on my lips, because of the enormous desire I have to see this snowy city.
When leaving the plane we verify that yes, it is half snowing !!!
We pick up our suitcase and go straight to the counter where to buy the ticket to the bus that takes you from the airport to the center of Tallinn.
The ticket office is just coming to the left and is seen by a kind of flag that indicates it, is the "Hansabuss" number 90K. It costs us 2 euros per person.

From the airport to the city it is about 4 kilometers and we have to stop at stop number 6.
Together with the ticket they give us a map of the city where the hotels also leave and their corresponding stop, with the distance that separates them, something that comes perfectly to place us a little more.
Already when we leave for the bus stop (it is leaving the airport to the left) small snow flakes begin to fall.
As we said before one of the things we wanted most on this trip was to meet the snowy city ... and it seems that we will be lucky!
The buses leave every half hour and seeing that it is almost 12 we prefer not to stop to eat anything and go directly to the Tallinn hotel, the Metropol Hotel.
It took us a little more than 15 minutes to arrive and although it took us a bit to get our bearings at the beginning, in the end we managed to find the Metropol Hotel, where we have made the reservation made for months.
After doing the cheking we decided to rest a little in the room and eat some sandwiches that we brought for breakfast at the airport and that we had not eaten them in the rush of having coffee and having the talk without interruptions!
Here we begin to notice that the Estonian character is not too open, if not quite the opposite. At least so far we have not received a single smile or a single "thank you" since we arrived. Will this continue like this ???

You can find more information in this article about the best cards to travel without commissions.

When we realize it is already 2 in the afternoon and we decide that it is time to go to discover the city.
As soon as we leave, we see that the day does not accompany as much as we would like. It has stopped snowing and now what we have is a rain that is not intense but rather annoying.
Seeing that this does not look like changing we keep the cameras in our backpack and decide that it is best to go for a walk to get an idea of the city and have that first contact that we like so much when we arrive at a new place for us.
We are on our way to the medieval city of Tallinn and we enter through the famous Viru Gate.
Despite the bad weather the streets are lively and we see that the restaurants are full.
We walked without any fixed course for 2 hours admiring the streets of the the medieval city of Tallinn in Estonia that we wanted to know so much.
We are crossing with all the things we have in the planning to visit, but we do not want to “stop too much” because we do not accompany the time. This we will leave for Sunday that we hope to have a much better day.

Start to tighten our tiredness and we decided to make a short stop to snack and take strength.
We choose a cafeteria with a very good look and a counter full of cakes that are a spectacle. Of course, inside there is not a tourist! Perhaps that is why they serve us with a half smile and how it happened to us in the Tallinn hotelThey have hardly even spoken to us.
One of the things that they had told us and that we have already discovered is that in this city the internet connection is something usual and free in 95% of the sites.
We had read it but we didn't think it would be on such a scale!
You can connect for free from the site you least imagine and the connection is very good. Let's see if they learn the rest of the countries :))
After coffee and candy we go to one of the viewpoints from where we have great views of the city, but with the one that is falling we only dare to take the camera quickly to take a couple of photos.

Views of Tallinn from one of the viewpoints

Awesome colors of the rooftops of Tallinn

We leave this viewpoint with a slightly strange feeling. We thought to enjoy it more, but the rain has not left us.
Of course, we hope that Sunday is "our day" and let us enjoy the city as much as we hope.
It's after 6 in the afternoon so we decided it's time to go back to the hotel and rest for a while. We have been at the plant since 4 in the morning and this begins to be noticed by our body ... and more now that the water has begun to drain.
We do some shopping to leave in the room and when leaving one of the stores we are surprised by something we were looking for ... the snow !!
We are walking the streets to our hotel with a smile in our mouth, checking on our phone, via Wi-Fi, that the expected weather is still snow during these days!
We rest for a couple of hours in the room to finish looking at the things we want to visit tomorrow and go out again in search of a recommended restaurant that is close to the hotel.
Seeing that it does not stop snowing and that we do not really want to walk, we say for the "Vapiano" an Italian restaurant where as a curiosity we will say that they give a card where they electronically point out all the things you are asking for.
Then we learned that it is a well-known chain in many countries.
There we ate 2 bruchettas plus two pasta dishes, a water and a beer for 23 euros ...
What else can we ask for: good, beautiful and cheap !!!
We return to the Metropol Hotel, now we already want to rest, but this time not only lie down, now we need to close our eyes and sleep !!
I don't think it took us long to get it.
Tomorrow we will cross the Baltic Sea by ferry from Tallinn... tomorrow we go to Helsinki !!
