Day 21: VARANASI

Monday, May 21, 2012

Today is 7 in the morning and we are ready to go to breakfast at The Gateway Hotel Ganges. Today's planning is to go through the part of the Ghats of Varanasi that we have left and then get lost in the streets of the "inner" Varanasi that we still don't know and we really want to know.
Those streets that remain between the Ghats and the main street, which both attract our attention since we read and saw photos some time ago.
We take a rickshaw that takes us downtown for 100 rupees (we could have bargained, but Roger hasn't been too fast this time ... hahaha)
Upon arrival we already noticed that the heat of India Begins to notice and imagine what awaits us ...

Walking through the Varanasi Ghats

Images in the Varanasi Ghats

At every step we take, we want to take out the camera and start photographing everything in front of us.
We have to make real efforts to maintain respect and not take pictures of “everything that moves” in the Ghats of Varanasi.
We continue walking, although the heat makes me feel lazy and wanting to return to the hotel to somewhere with air conditioning !!
It seems incredible that there is so much moisture. We don't stop drinking water, but we're still thirsty.

After almost an hour, we took out the guide to see how much we have left to reach the last Ghat of Varanasi and to the cafeteria "Open Hand 's" and what a surprise we take when we see that we still have a little less than half!
And with the heat it does ... and not a shadow ... This is inhuman! 🙂

When we finally reach the last Ghat, it is after 9 in the morning and we look like the cafeteria crazy.
Finally we hit her and there we took two soft drinks for just under 100 rupees.
We look at the things they have in the store, at a fixed price and although there are many things we like, being all textile, it is not what we have been looking for ...
We leave there with the idea of walking quietly through the streets adjacent to the Ghats, until we reach the center of Varanasi.
And that we do ... get lost in the streets and among the people, taking advantage of the few shadows we find, to keep us cool.

Rickshaw in the streets of Varanasi

In one of the stores that we see, we took the opportunity to buy some figurines of Indian musicians that we had seen before in the hotel store of Varanasi and that we had liked and a couple of incense boxes for 30 rupees each.
The idea is to buy some more in the remainder of the day 🙂
Yes I know, this sounds very consumerist, but I am addicted to incense and I will not leave here without buying!
After this little stop, we make another one to buy a couple of soft drinks and keep on walking.

We arrive at the area where we see rickshaws and after haggling with a couple, we get one that will cost us 100 rupees to the hotel.
It's a little after 12 in the morning, but we're not hungry yet, so we'll go to rest and take a shower before eating to cool off.

Traffic in Varanasi?

At 1 we will eat a Pizza Hut that we have near the Hotel and for 297 rupees we eat 2 pizzas, garlic bread, potatoes and 2 soft drinks.
When we eat, we see that we have a woman in her 60s, who we see eating alone and pointing things in a notebook ... We do not know exactly why, but it is those people who just look at them transmit "something" ...
Once we are done, we are going to eat an ice cream at McDonals and we are approaching ...
She is Colombian and does not speak English. He asks us to write some phrases in English in a notebook so that he can understand each other at the hotel Varanasi.
We're having a good time talking to her. Travel alone He has been in China, Nepal and now in India.
He explains several things that have happened to him and how he has been the victim of several deceptions.
We explain a little our route and some anecdotes.
We were impressed with her. A woman 10 without a doubt. Those types of people that you never forget and despite agreeing for a short time, mark a part of the trip to india.
After a good while, we went out and helped her to haggle a rickshaw to take her to her hotel.
No doubt an impressive woman ...
We return to the hotel to be protected in these hot hours 🙂
At 5 we go out again for what will be our last night in Varanasi.
The idea is to see the ceremony again, but this time sitting in a kind of bar that is right in front of where it is held.
You can buy your drink below and then pay 100 rupees per person for going up and sitting.
We do not doubt it. This time we want to see "everything" with peace of mind!

Ceremony at the Ghat Dasaswamedh in Varanasi

After being here for more than an hour, we return to our usual restaurant during these days for dinner, the Dolphin Restaurant.
We repeat the pasta dish and the french fries, to which we add pakoras and naan cheese and garlic ...
Tonight we say goodbye to the city looking back on more than one occasion as we move away from the Varanasi ghats.
Here we leave many emotions of this trip to india and above all we leave a dream, this time fulfilled.
Touch rest at The Gateway Hotel Ganges.
