Day 5: MASAI MARA NATIONAL PARK

November 03, 2010

Today we get up early, to tour the western part of the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya.
On the way we see masais with his cattle and always with the smile on his mouth, which we are accompanied by greetings when they see us pass.
Today is the day of the great herds of zebras and wildebeest and we stop in front of some of the herds, to take pictures.

The morning passes quickly and without us noticing, we are at the first stop.
We park next to one of the park's airstrips and see the people loaded with suitcases, in their 4 × 4, waiting for the planes.

We in our truck, which does not stop attracting attention, let's go where we pass through Kenya!
We follow the tour of the Masai Mara park and we stopped when we saw a lioness beside a pond and an elephant passing by her.

We observe the image without speaking or almost moving, so as not to scare them.
A little further on we see several crows devouring the remains of a wildebeest, this we have to see with binoculars, since the truck has stopped us a little far and can not get off the track.
From here we go to make another “small walking safari”, where a ranger will accompany us, to see closely one of the most famous crossings of Mara river.

Masai Mara National Park in Kenya

We go through the dividing line of Masai Mara between Kenya and Tanzania, where a small rock indicates the border of each country.
Near there we stop to make the journey to the Mara river.
After 5 minutes walking we find the first crocodiles, no wonder they are a danger for zebras and wildebeest at the river crossing.
They are spectacularly great !!

We also see the first hippos up close. They look like "sweet" animals, but they are the most dangerous.

They take us to the most famous crossing of the Masai Mara, where we imagine that a week before there had been migration there.
There are still remains of wildebeest and zebra carcasses.
It would have been a sight to see Migration in the Masai Mara in Kenya, but we can't complain, the trip is exceeding all expectations.
It is clear that at some other time we will return to try to see the migration.
After 1 hour or so on foot excursion, we say goodbye to the ranger and return to our truck to continue with the safari. After half an hour, we stop to eat under a tree, where the lions' nail marks show us,

After a while, a herd of elephants appears on the horizon and we can't stop taking pictures of each other.

We rest for a while and get underway, towards the Oloololo area, where until we arrive we make a safari without stops to observe closely or take pictures of the animals.
The landscape is stunning and the sky incredible. The sky of Africa is different from any sky we have seen so far.
Although we do not stop, we see the landscape with the windows open, regardless of dust, rain ...
We must seize the moment.
Despite the idea of making a rally safari, the driver suddenly turned and went to an area where he had seen a cheetah with a hunting spirit.

Today we still do not understand how you can have so much view. It seems impossible.

Masai Mara National Park in Kenya

That was the best time of day in the Masai Mara until that moment.
We watched as he intended to hunt for more than half an hour, until he gave up and hid among the vegetation.
But it gave us the unique opportunity to observe him ...
We continue touring the Oloololo area, where we saw the greatest amount of wildlife, from herds of elephants, zebras ... to a herd of lionesses crossing in front of the truck.
Almost arriving at the camping area, we had a breakdown that caused us to delay the arrival half an hour.
The people who needed to get out of the truck to go to the service, were forced to be accompanied by the guide at all times ...
We arrive late at night to the camping area, so we set up the tents with the front.
Before dinner, "strange" noises were already heard, but everything was that they were zebras and hyenas ...
We ate a barbecue of meat and potatoes at the caliu, all accompanied by rice, vegetables and a variety of fruits for dessert.
As always everything great in Kenya.
The surprise came when after dinner, we were sitting chatting and suddenly we heard some noises.
Some of us approached and saw less than 10 meters a herd of zebras ... very close to the common area of bathrooms and showers (to see who is the ready to go to the bathroom on time!) Everything was in a substitution, but After a while, noises were heard again and as they approached, they began to say that they were hippos.
The guide said it was impossible and when he approached and shone with his flashlight, we saw 4 hippos within 20 meters of our stores in the Masai Mara.
That suffocated us a little and we could hardly sleep anymore.
At every moment we were lighting with our front and we were seeing more animals, buffalo, hyenas ...
In the end about 11 o'clock, we decided it was time to sleep ... even if it was surrounded by wildlife.
After the guide's recommendations, in case any animal approached us to the store, we all saw each other with more fear, so we asked him to tell us some travel anecdote ... and I think it was not a good idea at all.
In the end we all end up in our stores, with more fear than anyone!
Of course, it was one of the best nights of the trip.
It's amazing to find you in a tent, thinking that within 20 meters you have all those animals.
And tomorrow towards Lake Víctoria ...
