Day 17 - MUYUNA LODGE (Peruvian Amazon)

5.45 in the morning. It is a privilege to wake up at the Muyuna Lodge with the sounds of the Peruvian Amazon.
Throughout the night we have been listening to hundreds of sounds that have not stopped reminding us where we were and where we are staying, a cabin in the Peruvian Amazon, where we arrived yesterday from Iquitos.

Today we have to get up early, get up, a quick coffee (we'll have breakfast later) that at 6.30 in the morning we have a meeting for the first excursion of the day: a canoe trip to explore the surroundings of Muyuna Lodge.

Second day at the Muyuna Amazon Lodge

Who said that in the Peuran Amazon does not get up early?
We leave at 6.30 in the morning with a few mini canoes that the truth at first give a little respect for believing that they are unstable, something that later we will verify that it is completely the opposite and we are surrounding the area of the Muyuna Amazon Lodge for an hour and a half.

Canoes that we will use in this morning excursion

A privilege at this time of the morning to enjoy such a spectacle of nature. Is incredible! The sounds, the smells, the light that is at this time of the morning.

We begin our canoe tour through the Peruvian Amazon

With this smaller canoe you have access to places more surrounded by vegetation and less deep, although from time to time we have to help ourselves with the oars to make their way through the vegetation.

Canoe ride through the jungle

Now that we are living the experience, it is not surprising that most people when they relate this experience say they seem to feel like in a movie.

Entering the Peruvian Amazon jungle

Although one thing should be mentioned: mosquitoes are like airplanes. It is absolutely essential to wear relec, long sleeves and cover your ankles with long socks or high boots.
To us, although we go with all this protection they crush us every time we leave the room. There are moments, especially in the excursions we do inside the jungle, when we notice the bites through the pants.
Of course, despite that and the discomfort it entails, without a doubt the experience is very worthwhile and remains as a simple anecdote.
A few minutes before 8 in the morning we arrived at the lodge and we found the breakfast already prepared in the lounge. Without a doubt the best we have had in our trip to Peru and that we have always eaten great.

And as a detail we can tell you that we have toast and a bottle of oil, something that makes breakfast even more impressive.

Terrace of Muyuna in front of the lounge

After breakfast and chatting for a while with another coffee in our hand, we only have time to go to the room to put on our water boots, since at 9 we have another exit.

Terrace of our room of Muyuna that this afternoon we will try to enjoy with a good book

This time we will do the motorized canoe tour with which we will reach the mainland and take a short walk along the Peruvian Amazon jungle.

Landscapes that we see as we move away from Muyuna

As we enter the canals it seems not to be too hot, but at the moment we reach the mainland, mixed with mud and water 😉 the heat begins to make presence and tighten as if there was no tomorrow.

Entering the canals to reach the mainland

"Parking" the canoe to start the hike through the Amazon rainforest

We spent 2 hours touring a thousandth of this great reserve that, every minute that passes more special seems to us and we are more glad to have chosen to spend the last days of our trip to Peru.

Walk through the jungle

Pieces of heaven that we can see when the strong vegetation allows us

The sensations that we have in this excursion by land are difficult to describe. We have a mixture of excitement with some feelings of disbelief, because it seems a lie that we are traveling through a part of the Amazon jungle.
With these comments we do not want to give this experience a feeling of "adventure" that does not have, since arriving at this place, despite being only accessible by boat and being 3 hours from Iquitos, is already more than explored and of course not It's nothing dangerous.
While it is true that being further away than Puerto Maldonado, where the Peruvian jungle is normally accessed, it is the "less touristy" option.

Amazon vegetation

Toucan in the jungle

A few minutes before 12 noon we return to the canoe, circling around another area to see new landscapes and return to the Muyuna Lodge where we arrived when it has just started to rain.

It starts to rain when we arrive at the Muyuna Lodge

Now we can do nothing but take a shower and get back on track, since we have the food at 12.30 and at 3 in the afternoon we go back on an excursion, this time to see fish and fish piranha for dinner today .

Canoe area of Muyuna Lodge

We eat as if it were two days since we did not do it and we can say that every day that passes these cooks are overcome.

After a brief table we retired to our bungalow where we lay in the hammocks to devote ourselves to read for a while and a half doze with the sounds of the jungle. We could continue with this pace of life many more days.

Our room seen from the water

And so the minutes pass quickly and it is time to put on long pants, boots and go "on expedition": fishing awaits us.
And after a few minutes in which we go by motor we arrive at a spectacular lagoon where we try to fish piranhas.

Landscapes of the Amazon

Amazing "lagoon" in the Amazon

We say "we try" because after trying in 3 different places, at the end of the 6 that we are only 2 people are able to fish, one of them Roger who assures us tonight's dinner.

Piranha fishing

We have not commented that here, in the Peruvian Amazon, as it begins to rain after a few minutes it may be raining and after 5 more minutes wearing a splendid sun. This is something that has been surprising us since we arrived and that as the hours go by we begin to understand.

Incredible landscapes in the Peruvian Amazon

We are from 3 in the afternoon until almost 6 in the afternoon enjoying this activity and return to the Muyuna Lodge where we return to our rooms to enjoy the activity of reading and rest, which for that we are also on vacation.
At 7.15 we went out for dinner and an organized group of tourists has just arrived, losing some charm to the tranquility we have had so far. But hey, everything can't be had.
Tomorrow we have a full day excursion in which we would have to be from 8 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon but René gives us the option to go in the morning in search of wildlife, eat again at the Muyuna Lodge and then return to leave to enjoy and get to know the community of San Juan, located near the lodge.
This last option seduces us much more, to be able to have breakfast and eat more peacefully and come at noon to be able to take a shower so we stay tomorrow between 8.30 and 9 in the morning in the lounge to continue with our Amazon adventure.
Now it's time to enjoy the night again in our little piece of paradise at the Muyuna Lodge.
