Day 16: Cayos Cochinos: Survivors Island - La Ceiba - San Pedro Sula

We wake up with the soft rumor of the waves and that is that in paradise the alarm clocks become the sounds of nature. Today is our last day in Cayos Cochinos, scene of the program of the Survivors Island, so it's time to go down to breakfast soon, to take advantage of working a couple of hours, in front of a unique scenario and how could it be otherwise to sit in front of the sea to enjoy the last hours we have left in paradise, a paradise that we have found in this incredible Eden known to many for being the scene of the well-known television reality show.

Relaxing time in Cayo Mayor

While we spend the rest of the morning enjoying the last hours of relaxation, we cannot stop thinking about something we knew on the day of the Cayos Cochinos Tour, about the possibility of accommodation in Cayos Cochinos, which goes through the possibility of renting a property in Cayo Mayor, for example, for 100 dollars a day. These types of houses can accommodate 10-15 people and all you have to bring are the provisions for your stay there. Although another possibility is to hire a local to go to La Ceiba and do the purchase For your days of stay.

After this, we don't know if this place should continue to be "secret"and continue to maintain this essence that we have been fortunate to discover these last days of the trip to Guatemala and Honduras for free.

Turtle Bay Beach

It is 12 noon when we leave our room, lowering our backpacks to the jetty area, returning to take a break as an activity, this time with a coffee in hand, waiting for the boat to arrive at La Ceiba, door of entrance to Cayos Cochinos, where we arrived on a day that seemed to want to die the world under an infernal storm.
Clemente warns us that they will come to look for us around 1:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m., so we do not miss the opportunity to eat and take the opportunity to enjoy a last moment of reading before leaving paradise.

Last hours in paradise

It is 13:15 when a boat arrives to look for us, but we see that it is empty and it is that they have left the tourists of the Cayos Cochinos Tour bathing in Cayo Chachauate and now, back to La Ceiba, we will pick you up, so we get a good surprise and say goodbye to Cayos Cochinos in the best possible way, returning to Cayo Chachauate and returning to the area of the keys that have served as the setting for the program of the Survivors Island.

Approaching Cayo Chachauate

It did not take more than 15 minutes to reach Cayo Chachauate, where we took the opportunity to disembark for a while and return to enjoy one of the places that we liked most in recent days.

Arrival to Cayo Chachauate

Newcomers to Cayo Chachauate

We speak with the captain and he tells us that we will be here for at least 20-30 minutes, so we take the opportunity to take a tour of the island, reliving the moments we had a few days ago, when we had the good fortune of spending a day touring the keys

Chachauate Cay

On this tour, we meet Maite again, with whom without knowing very well how, we ended up talking about the Survivors program and she has lived here all editions, even being part of the film crew on some occasions. He has explained several anecdotes of the program, including the amount of money they pay to be able to roll the reality here, sometimes forgetting the damage that this does to the ecosystem. And it is that the first programs were shot in Cayo Timón for several editions, a virgin key, home of many birds, which disappeared a few days after being occupied and that did not appear again, until years later, when the filming ended in this key and they moved to Cayo Paloma. The truth is that knowing this type of details causes us some contradictory feelings, since on the one hand we know the economic value that this program brings to the country and especially to the premises that are hired, but on the other, we have also just learned the consequences , sometimes fatal, which derive from the program of the Survivors Island.

Chachauate Cay

Another thing that attracts our attention and with this we hope not to disappoint anyone, is the perspective they always teach us, which is that of a remote island, far from civilization.

We will not say that in Cayos Cochinos millions of people live, but we can not say that there is no life around and that there are several keys, quite close to the locations of the reality in which people live, such as Cayo Chachauate, where now we meet. Just look at this perspective of Cayo Paloma, with Cayo Menor in the back, to see the proximity to land of the Survivors Island.

Cayo Paloma with Cayo Menor just behind

After these minutes in which we have a slightly more direct view of this television program, our captain gives the boarding order, to get us on our way to Sambo Creek, where we will arrive in about 30 minutes.

Saying goodbye to Cayo Chachauate

When there are no more than 15 minutes left to reach the coast, what appears to be the icing on the cake of the day is that we cross several dolphin families, which make this the best way to say goodbye to Dirty calluses.
As we get closer to the coast we confirm something that we had already read several times and it is that Honduras is as green as you want to imagine, we not only see it as we approach the coast, but also on the way from Sambo Creek to La Ceiba, where we disembark and a taxi is waiting for us to take us to the Hedman Alas station, it takes about 30 minutes, where we have to take a bus that will take us to San Pedro Sula.

Sambo Creek to La Ceiba route

We arrived at the Hedman Alas station in La Ceiba at 15:20, practically an hour before our bus leaves for San Pedro Sula and after waiting a few minutes in a tiny station, but more than adequate, our bus leaves for San Pedro Sula airport, because by schedules and by staying just 7 kilometers from the airport, we were better off doing this route than not going to the center of San Pedro Sula.

The initial idea when we started to chart the itinerary of the trip to Guatemala and Honduras was to have stayed tonight in La Ceiba and catch the first bus to the airport the next day we had the flight to Barcelon, but telling that in La Ceiba we would not have done anything either In these late hours of the afternoon, we have preferred to make the trip back already today and thus go quieter tomorrow, being already near the airport.

The path of La ceiba to San Pedro Sula airport It is 3 hours, the city is about 3:15 minutes, which we do immersed in the landscape, looking out the window, impressed with the green of the country, the exuberant nature and especially thinking about how unpleasant it is to know the news so discouraging that we received from Honduras, about security in many parts of the country.

We arrived at 18:30 at the San Pedro Sula airport, where the transport of the Metrotel Express hotel that we had hired for $ 10 is already waiting for us, to take us to our accommodation tonight, just 10 kilometers from the airport, where we arrived at 10 minutes.
We do a checkin more than fast, taking advantage of dinner at the restaurant that is right next to some quesadillas, nachos, chicken fingers plus a couple of soft drinks for 450 lempiras.

Having dinner at San Pedro Sula

It is 10 at night when we fall surrendered, knowing that it is our last night in Honduras, the last night of this trip in a bed and that tomorrow we spend the night on the plane back home.
