Thailand the country of smiles, the starting point to know one of the most beautiful areas in the world, Southeast Asia. It was our first trip to this area and it is one of our best trips and we have more memories. During our 21-day free trip in Thailand we divide the tour into 3 stages: visit Bangkok, local transportation route to Northern Thailand and relax on the paradisiacal beaches of the Krabi area.
In this diary of what to see in Thailand in 21 days we detail our route and the visits we made each day. We start !!!

Day 1: BARCELONA - BANGKOK

Flight Day with the Air Jordanian company with stopover in Amman, is one of our favorite companies with its comfortable aircraft and military pilots.

Day 2: BANGKOK (Khao San)

Sunday, November 2, 2008

We arrive in Bangkok at noon, between collecting luggage and taking a taxi we arrive at our hotel almost at sunset, traffic in Bangkok is horrible (especially the first time), you always have to negotiate with the taxi drivers the price and ask them to put the meter or fix A price before.
We left our bags at the Navalai River Resort hotel, which overlooks the Chao Praya River and went to the Khao San area.
This area is very close to the hotel and it was a surprise for us.

Book your Bangkok Airport transfer here

The main street has a lot of atmosphere, full of backpackers, young tourists with low budget, many food stops, shops of all kinds, there you can eat a good plate of Pad Thai, typical food of street stalls consisting of fried noodles with various vegetables to which they add some meat.
After walking, dead tired, but very encouraged, we stopped for dinner at a restaurant in Kao San and had our first culinary experience: fabulous!
We were walking, until it was time to return to the hotel, to start reviewing our planning the next day.

Day 3: BANGKOK (Royal Palace, Wat Phra Kaeo, Wat Pho, Wat Arun.Wat Mahatat, Amulets Market, Wat Saket, Golden Mount, Village of Monk Bowls ...)

Monday, November 3, 2008

When I woke up I ran to the balcony to see the views and my first vision, they were monks ... the smile I think has lasted for hours ... it is one of the best views I could have: we are finally in Thailand!
The hotel is on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, with a stop in front of the express boat, so in the morning and knowing all the things we have what to see in Thailand, we took it to go first Wat Arun on the other shore, for this you have to take a special boat that only crosses the river.
We visit the Wat Arun Buddhist temple that stands out for its central prang, which you can climb and where you have magnificent views of Bangkok and the decoration of seashells and porcelain pieces.

Wat Arun in Bangkok

There we have begun to crush our cameras and soak up the sights we had ... first visit and we are impressed.
After a good time there, we cross the river again and we will visit the Wat Pho, known for having inside the great Reclining Buddha which, with its 46 meters long and 15 meters high, is the statue of Biggest Reclining Buddha in Thailand. The entire statue is covered with gold leaf. It fits right in the Wat of how big it is and highlights the murals on the soles of the feet.

Temple of the Reclining Buddha in Bangkok

The feeling of being there is indescribable. A mixture of many sensations, which with words is impossible to define.
Nearby there is The Grand Palace and the Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), it is a large architectural complex formed by a group of buildings that served as royal headquarters from the eighteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. The most important place in the palace is the Wat Phra Kaew temple, in which is the Emerald Buddha which, carved in jade in the fifteenth century and only 45 centimeters high, is the most valuable and revered in Thailand.
You can not take pictures inside, but from the outside with a good zoom you can make the Buddha, you also have to know that it is mandatory to wear long pants for men and women, as well as wearing covered shoulders.
A good option to learn more about its history and curiosities is to book a tour of the Grand Palace and the temples of Bangkok with a guide in Spanish.
After this we are already saturated, impressed ... of such beauty (we still can't imagine what we have left to see)
In the afternoon we took a tuktuk and went to Wat Mahathat, headquarters of the most important monastic order in Thailand and the Vipassana Meditation Center. One of the oldest temples in Bangkok. Near the temple there is the amulets market, which we walk patiently, stopping many times.

Then we went to see the Wat Saket which is located on the top of Mount Dorado, after climbing a few stairs you arrive at this temple where you have good views of the city.
As we went up, we saw that the sky began to cloud and we came through the hair without getting too wet.
There we had a spectacular storm. It was incredible to spend there in an hour, without the rush of the day and we were able to recreate ourselves in the temple with much more serenity.
When it stopped a little, we went down and took a tuktuk to go to the village of the Monk Bowls, since although we knew it was close in Bangkok it is almost impossible to orient itself through the streets and for the price it is better to take a tuktuk. They took us to a place where these handmade bowls are sold.
But when it was raining there was no stop, so the driver took us to a position that although it was closed, we opened it so we could buy one.
These containers are used by the monks to receive alms from the faithful and it is the only site that the originals sell.
It is one of the things I have the most affection for. It is one of my great possessions today.
After buying "my" bowl, we decided it was time to go to the hotel and get some rest, so we told the friendly driver to take us.
In the evening we went again to Khao San Road for dinner, a drink and a walk.
Today was a magnificent day, full of contrasts, but especially intense.

Day 4: BANGKOK (Dusit Park, Vimanmek Mansion, Wat Benchamabophit, Wat Traimit, Jim Thompson House, MBK, Chinatown, ...)

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

We get up early and have breakfast at the hotel, on the terrace that is on the banks of the river, reviewing all things what to see in Thailand We have left.
From the first day our breakfasts there will be especially "succulent".
In the morning we will see the Dusit park and the Vimanmek mansion, which is the largest golden teak building in the world.
You have free admission with the entrance to the Royal Palace. Afterwards we went to visit the Wat Benchamabophit is a marble temple that was built with classic European ecclesiastical elements such as colored glass windows, and contains a collection of images of Buddha in bronze.
This temple is especially beautiful.
It has a special charm, especially for the peace we find.
We are having enough luck, not finding very crowded sites, since that was one of our great fears.
In the afternoon we visit the Jim Thomson Mansion which is made up of several traditional houses that form a kind of museum where this silk merchant accumulated all kinds of treasures: Cambodian sculptures, Chinese porcelain, Thai paintings. It has a store where you can buy its silk but it is very expensive.
We went to Chinatown to visit the neighborhood and see the Wat Traimit, which is the temple of the Golden Buddha and houses an impressive image three meters high and five and a half tons of gold. The image was discovered 40 years ago, because before it was covered by a stucco that concealed gold, to hide it from the Burmese in its invasion.
Chinatown is full of street food stalls and shops.

Wat Traimit Temple in Bangkok

We liked it a lot, but we don't know why, it didn't "fill" us. Maybe the day was a bit cloudy and did not accompany, but we did not find too much taste.
After our tour of Chinatown, we went to MBK, the most famous shopping center in Thailand, where you can find clothing brands such as Diesel, Armani, at a great price.
As was logical, our consumerist eagerness entered us and we had to look seriously in the face several times, so as not to go crazy with the purchases.
And more when our intention of the trip was "spiritual" ... but you know ... shopping, it's shopping.
After taking an iced coffe, we take a tuktuk (always haggling) and return to the Kao San area, for our dinner and our rigorous ride before going to rest.

Day 5: BANGKOK - AYUTHAYA (Wat Suwan Dararam, Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Lokaya Suthram ...)

Wednesday, November 05, 2008

Today we start the route and get up early.
After breakfast, we ask for a taxi, to take us to the station.
We have our train tickets to go to Ayuthaya.
It takes an hour and a peak to arrive, the train is very comfortable and gives the possibility to admire the landscape.
You can also visit the incredible ruins of Ayutthaya in one day from Bangkok by van or by booking this boat tour with a guide in Spanish.
We arrived at the hotel, which we have reserved, near the station to leave the backpacks and we took in front as a larger than normal tuktuk to visit all the historical temples of Ayuthaya.
They are totally different from what we had seen so far, they form the ruins of the ancient capital of Thailand, which was recognized as a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
We visit almost all temples for about 6 hours.

Ayuthaya in Thailand

As I have commented on another occasion, it is something that cannot be described, it has to be seen.
They can also be visited by bicycle but unlike Sukhothai they are very far from each other and you can waste a lot of time.
Among those we visited were the Wat Phra Sri Samphet, the most important temple with the most royal figures, the recently restored Ayuthaya-style Wat Suwan Dararam, Wat Phra Ram rebuilt several times, with its Angkorian chedi, Wat Mongkol, great , is the temple of the reclining Buddha of 28m long, Wat Nah Phraname where there is an image of Buddha carved in black stone, Wat phra Mahathat where you have to look for the head of the Buddha trapped between roots, Wat Raya Burana, Wat Mongkol Bopit and the Wat Phra Susanghet.

Wat Phra Mahathat

After our visit, we go to the hotel to rest for a while.
At night we took another tuktuk to see the most important illuminated temples, a highly recommended excursion.
After this, we have dinner at a restaurant near the hotel and we will rest after a very full day.

Day 6: AYUTHAYA - LOPBURI - PITHSANOLUK

Thursday, November 6, 2008

We get up early.
Today we play train to Lopburi (the tickets are taken the day before we arrive) to visit the Phra Sam Yot, Wat Phra Si Rattan Mahathat and the Prang Khaek, it is a small town and the temples are close to the station, so We left our backpacks in slogans and went to visit them.
When you go through the city and approach the Phra Sam Yot you begin to see the monkeys hanging by the light cables, collecting food from the ground. Who was going to tell us that with things what to see in Thailand We were going to end up in a city full of monkeys!
Within the area where the Phra is located it is full of monkeys and you can buy pipes to give them to them, you have to be careful because they try to remove the bag, the glasses and everything you wear loose.
We spent about 3 hours on the visit and returned to the station to pick up the backpacks and wait for our train to Pithsanoluk.
We arrived in the afternoon and went to visit the city and the Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat this monastery commonly called by the inhabitants as "Wat Yai", is the most important monastery of Phitsanulok, the home of the famous Phra Buddha Chinnarat. One of the most important in Thailand.
We entered and there was a liturgical act with many Buddhist monks. We take off the bamboo and enter the temple and sit down to listen to the Buddhist prayers.
Great momentazo ... we think it's a lie to be here.
At night we go around the city, where there are food stalls, where you can try all kinds of grasshoppers and bugs.
We opted for a pad thai ... for that of "better known good than bad to know."
After dinner, we return to the hotel, to rest.
Tomorrow touches movidito day.

Day 7: PITHSANOLUK - SUKHOTAI

Friday, November 7, 2008

This section of the route touches a new means of transport: the bus.
Incredible, people on the floor, people in the seats ... but how many people fit in a bus?
When we arrive, we go in search of our hotel to leave the backpacks.
They are a kind of bungalows ... very cute and with a very typical atmosphere.
From there, the vans leave, which once filled, take you to the historical park where the temples are located.
Due to the treasures it houses, Sukhothai is one of the places protected by UNESCO.
Here you can find ruins belonging to: ancient palaces, Buddhist temples, canals, bridges and other signs of previous civilizations.
Before entering the complex we rent a bike for two to make the tour of the area and when you buy the entrance they also give you a map with the situation of each temple, among which the Wat Mahathat is the main Buddhist monastery of Sukhothai and one of the most spectacular. The dominant structure is a central chedi, adorned with a stucco frieze that shows the various disciples of Buddha. Inside there is a great image of the Buddha sitting among the columns of a room now in ruins.

Wat Si Chum Buddha in Sukhothai, one of the best things to see in Thailand

Some are a bit far and we had a flat tire when we were away from the park, luckily there was a bar nearby and a family helped us.
They took Roger by motorcycle to where we had rented the bike and told them where they had to go to pick it up.
There he rented a tuktuk to do the rest of places to see in Sukhothai essential
and that were further. In the end, the prick went well.
Amazing girl's face when we gave them some baths for helping us. For a moment, we thought he was going to cry.
We left with a good taste, seeing more closely the special treatment they gave us.
We stayed until sunset visiting most of the temples we had planned and once it began to get dark, we returned to our hotel, for dinner and rest.

Day 8: SUKHOTAI - CHIANG MAI (Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Chiang Mai, Wat Jet Yot, Wat Ku Tao, Wat Pra Singh, Night Bazaar ...)

Saturday, November 8, 2008

Today we have another bus, but this route is a bit longer.
We are not heavy, but we arrive at noon, just to eat!
And we go in search of an Italian that they recommend in the guide. And how could it be otherwise, we put on our boots.
In the afternoon we take a walk around the city. Chiang Mai is the largest and significantly cultural city in northern Thailand, you will see that there is a lot of tourists and in a street near the night bazaar you can find a restaurant with some Spanish meals. After a few days without trying it, it tastes like glory, I assure you.
We visit some of the most famous temples, such as Wat Chedi Luang, which stands out for a dragon-shaped staircase that adorns the main chapel.
The Wat Chiang Mai the oldest temple in Chiang Mai. King Mengrai lived there while supervising the construction of the city. This temple contains two very important and revered images of Buddha - Phra Sila (Marble Buddha) and Phra Satang Man (Crystal Buddha). We can also see the Wat Jet Yot or the Wat Ku Tao.
A good option to learn more about the history is to book this guided tour in Spanish through the temples of Chiang Mai.
At night we went to the night market, to look a little at the stores that sell clothes and above all the crafts, it cannot be said that if you want to buy something at a good price you have to bargain and much.
We were well into the night and we headed to our hotel, which is very close to the market.

Day 9: CHIANG MAI (Doi Inthanon)

Sunday, November 9, 2008

This day we are going to visit the Doi Inthanon National Park that is located near Chiang Mai. We took an excursion in the same hotel.
This park is located on the highest peak in Thailand. It is full of forests, orchids, birds. We also visited the pagodas they built for the king and queen when they were older. They are in one of the highest points and there are great views, the pagodas are in front of each other, each in a peak, to climb there are escalators. Then we visit the waterfalls of the so-called "Vachirathan Waterfall and Mae Klang Waterfall".
Finally, we toured the jungle in our own air.
It has been a very complete excursion.
A good alternative is to book this guided tour in Spanish to learn more about the history and curiosities of this place.
In the afternoon we went to live the Loi Kratong party, which takes place on a full moon night in November. Thousands of people float boxes adorned with flowers and candles on the canals of the city, to worship the goddess of water.
Lanterns in the form of hot air balloons, Lanna style, are launched into the air. They are believed to help rid the local people of trouble and are also taken to decorate houses and streets.
It is very beautiful to see the river full of flowers with candles and the sky full of these "lanterns" that can reach an incredible height.

Chiang Mai

You can fly your own balloon to bring you luck.
We go to our hotel with the incredible image of a sky completely full of "dots of light".

Day 10: CHIANG MAI - CHIANG RAI (Gold Triangle, Giraffe Women's Tribe, Laos ...)

Monday, November 10, 2008

This day we made the excursion from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai.
We get up early and leave by van about 8 people from different countries, plus the guide and the driver.
The first one was in a hot spring where we were visiting for a while.
From there, we went towards the Mekong River where the golden triangle is located, this is the area where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar (Burma) and Laos are located, divided by the Mekong River and being an important traffic center Opium
There we made an excursion along the Mekong River, until they leave you on the other shore that is already Laos and where there are many shops for tourists.
There you can buy the typical snake or scorpion liquor.
That was one of our goals and we loaded the rest of the holiday with 3 bottles of snake liquor!
Already in the afternoon we visited the Karen tribe known because there are the "giraffe" women, it was said that they put these bronze necklaces so heavy to avoid the bites of the tigers on the neck, but right now it has become an attraction tourist, for us too "surreal".
We got the impression that they were exposed, so that the tourist can take a picture with them and leave money.
Of course, we imagine that it is a way to get an economic support, but we did not like it too much.
This was a point that we didn't like at all.
After this, we return to Chiang Mai for dinner.
Today has been a long day and after our usual walk through the market, we will rest.

Day 11: CHIANG MAI (Doi Suthep, Puping Palace, Umbrella Village ...)

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Today we go to the Doi Suthep, for that we take a taxi, before visiting it we stop at the Puping Palace which is the royal winter residence located on Mount Doi Suthep.
It is worth visiting the palace gardens.
Then we went to the temple of Wat Pra That Doi Suthep which is located in a spectacular place 1,156 meters above sea level on Mount Doi Suthep, overlooking the Chiang Mai plateau. It is one of the best known places in Chiang Mai, which dates from 1383 with Buddhist relics inside its golden pagoda. Buddhists from all over the world make pilgrimages throughout the year.
You climb the temple by an impressive Naga staircase of 300 steps. For those who prefer, there are funiculars that ascend to the temple as well.
There we especially enjoyed sitting on a terrace, having an iced coffe.
It is a special place, where every corner expresses some feeling.

Doi Suthep

When we finished the visit we went to Bor Sang, it is a small town near Chiang Mai and is famous for making its beautiful umbrellas. Almost all the people are engaged in this activity.
To return to Chiang Mai, you pass a road full of craft factories of all kinds, we found it quite expensive and seeing all the same sizes made us give up on the purchase.
In the afternoon we visited another temple in Chiang Mai and returned to the Night Bazaar to do the last shopping, have dinner and give ourselves a foot massage.
Spectacular!!

Day 12: CHIANG MAI

When we finished we waited for the van to take us to an orchid plantation where you can see them of all types, they are spectacular.
In the afternoon we went to give us a Thai massage in a center near the bazaar to relax and recover from these days without stopping.
We are living incredible days!

Day 13: CHIANG MAI - BANGKOK - KRABI

Thursday, November 13, 2008

This has been a day of transfers and airports.
We take a flight early to Bangkok and there another to Krabi, we fly with Air Asia, a low cost company from Asia.
We arrived in Krabi and took a shared taxi with another couple to Ao Nang.
We see our hotel room ... and hallucinate.
All accommodations so far have been fantastic, but this exceeds our expectations.
We leave our bags and go walking to the beach to watch the sunset
It is a huge beach, where you can find all kinds of restaurants and shops on the seafront.
It is a town where most people are tourists and everything is focused on them.
We have dinner at a restaurant and after having a drink, we will rest, from now on, they play a few relaxing days ...

Day 14: KRABI (PUT Island, Chicken Island, Poda Island, Phra Nang Beach ...)

Friday, November 14, 2008

These days we have hired excursions directly with the hotel, to take us to different islands.
Today it touches an excursion to the four islands, they are close to Ao Nang, they do it with a speedboat.
First we went to Phra Nang beach where at the end of the beach there is a huge rock wall, where there is a cave with a sanctuary inside, full of wooden penises of all sizes.
In this same place there is a large vault with stalactites. Most of these beaches stand out for the turquoise blue color of the water.
We pass near Chicken Island, it is an island whose rocks form like a head of this animal, we stand in front to snorkel and see the coral and fish.
Then we went to Put Island, where we were on the beach for a while and when we went to the neighboring island at low tide.
We also visit the Poda Island that stands out for bamboo plantations, rocky cliffs and a beautiful beach.
Highlight on the beaches the signs that tell you where to go in case of a tsunami warning.
After this excursion, we come with charged batteries and that we are not too beach.
But these are spectacular.
You can book here the excursion to these islands which includes snorkeling and barbecue to eat.
In the afternoon we were in the hotel pool enjoying an ice cofee and an iced banana and at night we went to the town to have dinner in an Italian, where we will repeat on occasion.

Day 15: KRABI (Phi Phi Islands)

Saturday, November 15, 2008

Today we visit the Phi Phi Islands.
Before we went to Bamboo Island, it is a desert island with a magnificent beach and excellent coral reefs to explore snorkeling.
The Monkey Beach, well protected in the bay where you can find all kinds of marine life, and even some beach monkeys hanging on the beach trees.
The Koh Phi-Phi Leh, the smallest of the Phi-Phi islands and the best we saw, where Maya Bay is one of the best beaches in the world where the movie “The Beach” was filmed, although it was beautiful there were too many people and that's why we don't enjoy it so much.

Maya Bay Beach

We stayed with others where we were that were almost deserted.
After another relaxing day ... in the afternoon, we return to the pool, to our iced coffe and our rigorous ride ... to our Italian restaurant.
This is life!!
We went to Phi-Phi Don to eat, it is the largest of the islands and the one that is inhabited all year, there is a small town with tourist shops. We were on other beaches such as Lohsamah Bay with colorful corals and fish on the beach that surrounded you when you bathed, until the return to Ao Nang.
You can book here an excursion to the Phi Phi Islands by speedboat.

Day 16: KRABI (Hong Islands)

Sunday, November 16, 2008

Today they touch the Hong Islands.
First we stop at the Hong Laguna, a fantastic lagoon with the sea crashing into the limestone cliffs.
After we went to the Pakbia Island are two amazing white sand beaches.
Where we stayed for a while was on the Hong Island, with its transparent waters.
There we saw the sea leave towards the beach where we were lying, a lizard about two meters long, first people got a little scared, but then everyone taking pictures and recording it.
When we went to eat on this same island, 2 more approached, to eat the remains of the food, but the guides told us not to get too close that they could be dangerous.
We also visit the Rai Island, which when the tide is low, you can walk from one island to another on the magical beach that appears and disappears at high tide.
The Daeng Island, this island is a large rock that comes out of the sea. At low tide we can visit and admire its fabulous coral reefs.
We were also on Paradise Island.
After visiting so many beaches and islands, it may seem boring, but not at all.
We are not a beach, but on these excursions, you intersperse boat, snorkel, a little beach ... walks ... it is incredible.
For dinner we went to a restaurant, which is like a self-service of oriental food, of high quality.
It is located on the promenade that goes to the beach and if you are very hungry it is the ideal place.
You can book this tour by speedboat or Thai boat here, and include a kayak route.

Day 17: KRABI (Phang Nga Bay, Koa Ping Kan, Kao Tapoo, Koh Panyee, Wat Suwankuha, Toa Thong Waterfall ...)

Monday, November 17, 2008

This day we went to Phang Nga Bay, which is located between Phuket and Krabi, it is an archipelago composed of islands and tiny limestone islets of vertiginous walls populated with lush vegetation and beaches, some islands have inland lagoons and caverns that can be Explore by kayak.
We arrived with the van to a jetty where we took a long stern boat to see the entire bay, we stopped at another jetty where you had the option to take a canoe tour.
The next stop was already in Koh Panyee, which is a floating town, whose inhabitants of Asian origin, but of Muslim religion, live from fishing.
Their houses are built on wooden piles in the sea, it is also very touristy, it is all full of souvenir stalls.
We ate fish there.
After lunch, we went to the island Kao Tapoo, which is known for the island of James Bond where “The Man with the Golden Gun” was filmed and which stands out for the rock that is near the beach.
There we did not like the beach so much, but it was a place we wanted to visit.

Phang Nga Island

Then we went to the cave of the Monkey temple (Wat Suwankuha), a temple that is in a cave full of monkeys, very interesting.
Finally we went to the Toa Thong waterfall where we took a bath in the middle of the jungle.
And then, as usual already ... iced coffe, dinner in Italian and rest ...
Well, that rest is quite relative ... we have a few days of total relaxation!

Day 18: KRABI (Ao Nang, Laem Peninsula Phra Nang, West Rai Leh, Hat Phra Nang, Hat Rai Leh ...)

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

This day was relaxing (much more than the previous days) without any excursion.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
