Best time to travel to South Africa

If you have specific dates to travel to South Africa, do not worry as we would dare to say that any time is good to travel to the rainbow nation. If this is not the case and you can choose dates, before deciding when to travel to South Africa, it is important to consider certain details, such as the activities you want to do or your tastes, to determine the best time to travel.

  • High Season: Includes the months of December to March, at which time there are many more people in the tourist places, especially at Christmas and Easter, which are also the times when prices soar.
If you want to travel on these dates, you should book your accommodation well in advance, especially in national parks such as the Kruger, taking into account that there are even people who do it one year in advance.
It should be borne in mind that although it is high season, the weather is not always the best, since they are usually the wettest months of the year.
  • Mid season: The months of April and May, in addition to October and November, are the months that are included in the middle season in South Africa, being suitable for wildlife observation, since it is the time when the first and the first Autumn and with them also the good weather typical of these dates.
  • Low Season: From June to September winter arrives in South Africa and with it the low season in the country, at which time the prices are cheaper and the ideal time for wildlife observation also begins.
Although the weather is usually optimal, keep in mind that it is usually a rainy season in the Cape Town area.

Noorhoeck Beach

If you only want to travel to South Africa for wildlife observation, there are other factors that we believe you should consider, in addition to time, to make your trip as complete as possible.
If you want to enjoy a safari, although logically the animals can be seen throughout the year, the best time is winter, at which time there is less vegetation and you can see much better. In addition to winter, the beginning of spring, in this case, is also an ideal time.
If you want to see the incredible southern whales, another reason why many travelers approach the South African coast, you must travel to South Africa between the months of June to December, at which time it is not strange to see them even from the own coast, as they usually get very close.

Visa to travel to South Africa

If you are Spanish, in order to enter South Africa you will need a valid passport with at least two blank pages and its expiration date must be at least 30 days after the date of departure from the country.
By having Spanish nationality you are exempt from a tourist visa for up to 90 days, provided that your passport meets the above conditions.

We recommend you always look at the website of Exteriors to check this data as they may change.

Transportation in South Africa

Although you could travel to South Africa considering making the route by public transport, according to our experience, it is best to choose to rent a car and if necessary, as we have done, on the flight from Port Elizabeth to Durban, make some internal flight between areas where you don't want to visit.

Rental car in South Africa

In our case, as we mentioned before, we have made the entire route of this trip to South Africa by rental car, something that has allowed us total freedom of movement and schedules and at the same time and after the experience, realize That is the best way to travel to South Africa.

In the same way, you should keep in mind that at this stage of the trip you will spend many hours in the car, so it is recommended that this is comfortable and spacious.

Money in South Africa

One of the questions you ask us most, especially when we are traveling, is how to get money abroad. To avoid paying commissions and always having the current change, we recommend using the N26 card to pay and the Bnext and Revolut cards to get money at the ATMs. They are the ones we use, They are free and will save you a lot.
You can find more information in this article about the best cards to travel without commissions.

Recommended route to travel to South Africa

Another of the tips for traveling to South Africa It refers to the route to be followed by one of the most incredible countries in the world.
Taking into account that it is impossible to cover everything and that time is also limited, we consider that with 3 weeks you can make a very complete tour that includes the most tourist places, in addition to of course, a few days in the Kruger.
In case of not having 3 weeks, you can leave the route to travel to South Africa in 2 weeks, reducing the number of days in the Kruger and eliminating some of the stages of the trip that we have made.

Something important, whenever possible, is to make the route starting with Cape Town and ending in Johannesburg. This will allow you to make the visits of "more or less", leaving the Kruger to the end which is for us the most amazing place in South Africa.

  • Cape Town: Recommended a couple of days to get to know the most important places. In addition you will have a little margin in case some day it dawns with fog, to change the day to go to Table Mountain.

Internet in South Africa. Buy a SIM card to connect to the internet

In South Africa you can find different companies to buy a free SIM card to connect to the internet or call during your trip.
In our case we have opted for Vodacom, since this is the one that offers better and greater coverage in the country, including many of the areas of the Kruger Park, which with other companies are not covered.

Keep in mind that there are Vodacom stores scattered throughout the country, including the main cities, where you can purchase the SIM cards although in our experience, as we did when we flew to Cape Town in South Africa, we advise you to buy it directly at the airport , either in Johannesburg or Cape Town, since here they are very used to this process and will provide you with all the data in addition to the activation themselves.
It is also important to know that Vodacom has different plans, depending on the data you want to acquire and the days you are going to use them. We opted for the 20Gb for 30 days for 1010 rands and the 10Gb, also for a month, for R605, which served us to work and be connected throughout the entire trip to South Africa in 25 days.
If you do it at the airport, as in the main stores of big cities, you can pay with Visa or MasterCard.
