Based on the time we spent in the city during our trip to Budapest in 4 days, we have made this list of what we believe are the 10 essential tips for traveling to Budapest. We start!

1. What is the best time?

The best time to travel to Budapest is in spring and autumn, especially May and September, when temperatures are mild, there is not so much tourism and prices are not as high as in high season.
In July and August temperatures can exceed 30 degrees, rains are more frequent, there are points of the city saturated with tourists and you will also pay a higher price for accommodation.
In winter the thermometers fall below 0 degrees and you have the possibility to see the snowy city. A good time for a trip to Budapest is at Christmas, when in several places in the city such as Vörösmarty Square, spectacular markets full of wooden stalls are set up.

2. Entry requirements and travel insurance

If you are Spanish, to enter Hungary, you only need your ID or passport, being a country of the European Union. If you are not a citizen of the European Union you will need to check with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Hungarian embassy in your country, to see if you need a visa and to know all the entry requirements.
We always recommend that you carry your ID and passport in two different places in all EU trips, in addition to a copy in the cloud, so that in case of loss or theft, you can solve the problem in a short time.
Another of the tips for traveling to Budapest or Hungary, is that you carry the European Health Card and if you do not have it, take out the best possible travel insurance. Despite carrying the European Health Card you must take into account that there are certain services that are not covered. In this post that talks about the best travel insurance to Europe you can find all the information.

We always travel insured with Mondo, with whom we carry a totally adequate insurance to the needs that we will have on the trip. Hiring your insurance here with Mondo, just for being a Street Travelers reader, you have a 5% discount.

3. Money exchange when traveling to Budapest

Although Hungary belongs to the European Union, the euro has not yet been adopted as the official currency. For this reason it is important to know the best way to get Hungarian florins, one euro equals about 320 florins, without paying commissions.
To avoid paying commissions and always having the current change, we recommend using the N26 card to pay and the Bnext and Revolut cards to get money at the ATMs. They are the ones we use, They are free and will save you a lot.
You can find more information in this article about the best cards to travel without commissions.

In case you don't have these cards, one of the best tips for traveling to Budapest, is to get money at ATMs in the city, rather than at airports and exchange offices, where the commission is higher.

4. How to get from Budapest airport to downtown?

Budapest International Airport or Ferenc Liszt, located 16 kilometers southeast of the city, is very well connected to the city center.
From the two terminals of the airport, which are together, you have these means of transport:

- Bus: You have the 100E line that will take you to the Deák Ferenc Tér stop, located in the center, in about 40 minutes for about 3 euros. These buses leave every 20 minutes from 5 in the morning until 0:30 in the morning.
Another still cheaper bus service is the 200E line that takes you to the M3 metro station, Kobanya-Kispest, in 20 minutes for one euro. From this station you can connect to the center and other subway lines.
- MiniBUD: This small minibus with a maximum capacity of 10 passengers will take you to your hotel for 8 euros. The drawback is that you can waste a lot of time, having to fill up to get out and stop at each passenger's hotels.

Our favorite area to stay in Budapest is District V, located in the heart of the Pest part. In addition to the points of all the interest that this district concentrates, you have numerous shops, cafes, restaurants and places with good atmosphere to go out at night.

Another interesting area to stay is the District I of Buda, where you will have nearby the castle and the Fisherman's Bastion. If you are looking for lower prices, we recommend you to look for a hotel in the old Jewish quarter, located in District VII, where prices are usually more adjusted than in the rest of the city.
