Mozarabic church of San Cebrián de Mazote in Valladolid

Until the recent travel through the province of Valladolid had not had the chance to see a Mozarabic church. But now I have visited what is considered the largest Hispanic temple of this period.

It's about the church of San Cebrián de Mazote, a small town located about 40 kilometers west of the city of Valladolid.

In the province of Valladolid I have also visited the Wamba church, a beautiful temple that is characterized more by its origin Visigoth that for his Mozarabic architecture.

If you are really curious to see a Mozarabic church, the best example is found in the current parish church of San Cebrián de Mazote.

It is actually a pre-Romanesque church from the time of the Reconquest whose structure is based on a succession of horseshoe arches.

Its origin dates back to a small Visigothic church from the 7th century, on which the current structure with Mozarabic elements was mounted at the beginning of the 10th century.

After several modifications in the later centuries, it was at the beginning of the 20th century when the artistic importance of this church was recognized, addressing various restorations until showing the aspect that you can now see when you visit it.

The exterior shows the image of a large parish church with brick walls, without pointing out any element that announces its Mozarabic style.

Inside you find a plant with three naves where the horseshoe arches that separate the side aisles of the central one, of much greater height, already call your attention.

The head with three apses, also with horseshoe arches, shows a great aesthetic sobriety, and over it a dome opens.

On your walk through this church you will see that the restored and reinterpreted areas clearly differ from the original ones.

In the central nave, with a wooden deck and with side windows where the light enters, especially the succession of columns will attract your attention, many of them possibly reused even of Roman buildings.

In total you will see 38 capitals from different periods and designs.

Luckily, all the baroque contributions that were included at the end of the 18th century were removed from its interior decoration during the restorations, and now it shows the sobriety of a 10th century temple.
