I had not been traveling to Ghent, in the Belgian region of Flanders, to the point that I barely had any images in memory, beyond the typical ones that you can see in brochures or webs tourist.

But recently, taking advantage of atrip to Bruges I had the opportunity to stop atGhent to, for a morning, take a quick tour of the city and thus have a first impression for a future trip with more time to visit it.

I assure you it was worth it.

Although the day began with a very thick sky, after a night of heavy rain, which in principle endangered the photo tour through Ghent, the truth is that throughout the morning the sky opened almost completely,

Thanks to this, sunlight helped to highlight the great beauty and charm of this city, without a doubt, an essential on a tourist route through Flanders.

What to see in Ghent

Ghent It has the advantage that it is not too big a city. On the contrary, you can visit its medieval center by walking, so that you can reach its most interesting corners on foot.

So, after going through the great Korenmarrkt pedestrian plaza, where the old one stands out post office building, you find the St. Nicholas church and the tower of Municipal Bell Tower together with the building of the Cloth Market.

Then you have the San Bavón Cathedral, where you can see the great masterpiece of flamenco painting, The Adoration of the Mystic Lambof the brothers Van eyck.

On that axis you have other prominent buildings, such as town hall or the modern and controversial Municipal Pavilion.

Other outstanding places that you should not miss during your walk through the medieval center of Ghent are the castle of the Counts of Flanders, a great and robust fortification, and the Meat Market, inside which you find a wide range of local products.

It is highly recommended to complete the visit by making a Ghent canals cruise, just like the one you can see in the video that accompanies this article, recorded during another subsequent visit to the Flemish city.

And finally I will tell you that it is worth spending a night in this city because then you can enjoy a illuminated Ghent walk, one of its great attractions.
