Corner of the Wroclaw market square in Poland

When planning my most recenttrip to Poland I had a great interest in visit the city of Wroclaw.

I had been told it was a beautiful city, maybe the most beautiful in Poland, but I had not bothered to document myself about it, because I preferred to be surprised by that promise.

And now I can confirm that, indeed,Wroclaw is beautiful.

Old town hall of Wroclaw in the Market Square

I started the visit by touring the Cathedral Island, historical place where some of the monuments are concentrated and Wroclaw's most prominent buildings, located outside the historic center.

But when I was really shocked it was when the heart of Wroclaw, to its marketplace.

Due to its size, it is the second largest square in Poland, after theKrakow Market Square, which I visited a few years ago.

What to see in Wroclaw Market Square

Both are huge and have a somewhat similar configuration, with a square shape and a set of buildings in the center of it.

Me Wroclaw visit coincided with a sunny day, full of light, and already on my first walk through the marketplace I was impressed.

It is true that we entered the street that led directly to the beautiful Gothic building of the old Wroclaw Town Hall, one of the prettiest I've seen in recent times.

It is also true that this building, like the rest of the square, has beenrebuilt behind the WWII.

You should know thatWroclaw It was one of the cities that suffered the most from the effects of the bombings during this contest, but, from my point of view, that does not take away any value.

This reconstruction has been done from the documentation that was had on what the square was like before the war, as is done, for example, in many German cities, highlighting the cases of Berlin or Dresden.

St. Elizabeth's Church from the Market Square in Wroclaw

Now on all four sides of the marketplace You can see a succession of colorful buildings, in total 65, which make up a beautiful architectural picture.

The origins of the Wroclaw Market Square They date back to the thirteenth century, and the beautiful Gothic building of the town hall was built from that time until the fifteenth century.

Its great architectural wealth is the expression of the power that reached the city at that time, and became a model for other buildings of the Lower Silesia.

This building of the old town hall now houses the art Museum of the city, and next to it is located the building of the current city hall.

Historic brewery in Wroclaw Market Square

The doors of the brewery open on the side of a beautiful building Piwnica Swidnicka, the oldest in the city, and famous for serving the popular beerSwidnicka.

Do not hesitate to enter to see inside the establishment.

In the northwest corner of the square is the church of Santa Isabel, one of the oldest in the city, which shows the tallest tower in the historic center of Wroclaw.

Near it you can see some of the small metal figures known as the Wroclaw gnomes or dwarves, of which there are about 250 distributed throughout the historic center.

The reason for their existence is surrounded by various legends, but I advise you to keep looking for them in the different corners of the historic center.

The marketplace It has a great animation at any time of the day and there are markets and other events in the city.

And, of course, it is the typical square where restaurants and bars with its very busy terraces are concentrated.

I advise you not to visit it once, but go two or three times during your day in Wroclaw. More if you are fond of photography, then you will not get tired of capturing its beautiful corners with the different lights of the day.
